Avan Ivan by Yuvan Shankar Raja - Music Preview

Expectations are high on this Avan Ivan music as Bala has come back to Yuvan after doing two films with Ilayaraja. It's a well known fact that Yuvan is capable of delivering great tracks for unusual, offbeat scripts.

A few days ago, Amazon and Sony Music released 30 sec samples of Avan Ivan tracks. You may listen to the samples here.

My expectations have gone high after listening to these samples.

Of the five songs, Rasathi, Oru Malayoram are going to be my picks I believe. Dia Dole has good drum beats while Avana pathi, folk song brings 'Paruthiveeran' Yuvan back. Couldn't make any guess on the pathos "Mudhal Murai". But, going by Yuvan's tweet, in which he mentioned "It's intense", I think this will be a haunting number. Yuvan also wrote that he had used 40 live drums for one of the songs. I guess it is Dia dole or Avana pathi.

Eagerly waiting for the songs. Should be out by April 18th! Get ready folks!

ஜில்லா விட்டு வந்த கதை - ஈசன் படப்பாடல்

இந்த வலைப்பூவிற்கு கிட்டதட்ட பூட்டு போட வேண்டிய நிலமைக்கு தள்ளப்பட்டுவிட்டிருந்தேன். மந்திரப்புன்னகை, எங்கேயும் காதல் படப்பாடல்கள் வெகுவாக கவர்ந்தாலும், விமர்சனம் எழுதமுடியவில்லை. இனியும் எழுத முடியுமா என்பதும் சந்தேகம் தான்.

ஈசன் படப்பாடல்களை கேட்க நேர்ந்தது. ஒரு ஆல்பமாக ஈர்க்கத் தவறினாலும், இதில் உள்ள 'ஜில்லா விட்டு' பாடல் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்துவிட்டது. உடனே எழுத வேண்டும் என்று தோன்றியது. அதான்.. வந்துட்டேன் :)

'வந்தனம் வந்தனம்' என்று பாடல் தொடங்கும்போதே, ஆட்டம் போட வைக்கும் 'ஊரோரம் புளியமரம்' போன்றொரு பாடலுக்கு தயாரகிவிட்டேன். 'கைகள் தாளம் போடனும், விசில் ராகம் பாடனும்' னு வரிகளைக் கடந்தவுடன் முடிவும் செய்துவிட்டேன். ஆனால் ஏமாற்றம். மறுகனமே 'சுகத்த விக்கும் பொண்ணுக்கும் மனசிருக்கும் கேளுங்க' னு வரிகள் கவர்ந்தன. வித்தியாசமான பாடலுக்கு தயாரானேன்.

8வது பெண்ணாக பிறந்து, துப்பில்லாதவனுக்கு வாக்கப்பட்டு, வயிற்றைக் கழுவ தன் உடலை விற்று பிழைப்பு நடத்தும் ஒரு பெண், தன் கதையை பாடலில் சொல்வது போல் அமைந்துள்ளது இந்த பாடல்.

அருமை... மோஹனின் பாடல் வரிகள், பாடிய தஞ்சை செல்வியின் உருக்கமான குரல் என பாடல் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்திழுத்தது. சில வரிகள் இங்கே...

காய்ச்சலுக்கு காடு வித்தேன்,
இருமலுக்கு நிலம் வித்தேன்...
வித்ததெல்லாம் போக, எச்ச்மாக நானுமே..
அட மிச்சமாக நானுமே...

என்று பாடும்போதே, அடுத்த வரிகளை நம்மால் யூகிக்க முடிகிறது...

உசிர விட மானம் பெரிசு,
புத்திக்க்குத்தான் தெரிஞ்சிச்சு...
வயிறு எங்கே கேட்டிச்சு...

போன்ற வரிகள் ஒரு தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தின.

கண்டிப்பாக கேட்க வேண்டிய பாடல். மிஸ் பண்ணிடாதீங்க.... அதிரடியான, காதைப்பிளக்கும் இசை, புரியாத வரிகள், அர்த்தமில்லாத வரிகள் என்றிருக்கும் பாடல்களுக்கு நடுவில், இது ஒரு வித்தியாசமான அனுபவம் தான்.

பி.கு: படத்தில் இந்த பாடலை எப்படி பயன்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள் என்று தெரியவில்லை. சம்பந்தமில்லாமல் வரும் திருவிழாப் பாடலாகவா அல்லது, ஒரு கதாப்பாத்திரம் தன் கதையை சொல்வது போல் வருகிறாதா என்று தெரியவில்லை. கதாப்பாத்திரம் எனில், அதன் பாதிப்பு அதிகமாக இருக்கும் என்பது மட்டும் நிச்சயம்.

Va Quarter Cutting - Music Review

Thediye thediye (though reported to be a lifted one here) is the pick of the album. It has a tune that sits comfortably in your ears and takes you with it so beautifully. More than the tune and orchestration, it is the lyrics that blew me away. Special mention to Kumararaja (Director of yet-to-be released ‘Aaranya Kaandam’). Andrea Jermiah has sung it well except for 'ல' ,'ள' massacre. The beauty of the song lies in its structure and the theme of it. The song has no regular Pallavi-Charanam structure. It has two parts, first half followed by an interlude which is followed by the second half. First half expresses the disappointments faced by the girl in searching her destination (a boy friend??) while the second half expresses the happiness as the search ends positively. I’m quoting a sample of the lyrics in this song.

First half disappointment:

வந்தும் வராமல் போகும்,

இரண்டாம் தும்மல், - போல் ஏய்த்திடும்,

என் Luck-உம் ஏமாற்றியே போகும்

Second half happiness:

கண்ணால் கண்டாலே போதும், கொட்டாவி போலே,

ஒட்டிக் கொள்ளும், என் ஆனந்தம் தொற்றிக்கொள்ளும்

Isn’t that so beautiful?? I loved it.

Unnai Kan theduthe that starts like a remix soon gets its own form. The orchestration is superb and the lyrics are very funny.

Saarpu saarpu ji is a song that stands out mainly for the ROTFL type lyrics and the rendition. If this song rings a bell when you listen to it, then it should be the Hindi song ‘emosanal atyachar’ from Dev D. Yes, the song does resemble this hindi number in some places.

‘Saudi Baasha’ is the only song that scores low marks in this album. There is nothing great that could impress me. May be I should give it some time.

G V Prakash Kumar scores a distinction for Va Quarter Cutting album. An entertaining album that is close to perfect.

Yuvan's Boss engira Baskaran - Music review

Just before we could finish enjoying the songs of Naan Mahan Alla, we have got the next album from Yuvan. Oh man! He is like a machine. Churning out album after album. So quick and fast. Way to go yuvan! His latest album Boss Engira Bhaskaran is however a mediocre album.

'Yaar indha pen thaan' is the pick of the album. A scintillating melody with lovely interludes and feel good lyrics by Na. Muthukumar. Haricharan gives the best when it comes to this kind of romantic melodies. He does it again. Tamil audience may get ready for another 'Thuli thuli'.

'Thathi thavum paper' is a song which Yuvan usually reserves for himself. This time, he has handed over the job to talented Karthi, who has done a good job. Despite the impeccable orchestration with lovely sax interludes, the song fails to instantly catch you, coz of the weak lyrics. Lyrics are pretty average and dud.

Ayile ayile (ilo iloo) is just another passable track while the other two tracks 'Mama mama' and the title song 'ada boss bossu' are of run-of-the-mill standard.

Overall, I personally rate Boss Enkira Baskaran above the team's last album "Siva Manasula Sakthi". Yar intha pen is enough to fight against all the songs in SMS. ;-)

Kalavaani - Movie review

It is really a tough job for a debutant director to make an impressing movie with less popular star-cast, average music. Director Sarkkunam (Sargunam), does it well in his Kalavaani. Kalavani is a clean entertainer that can be enjoyed with whole family.

The script is all about a guy who falls in love with a girl from the next village. Both villages suffer from age-old enmity. Even we have seen this story umpteen times, what makes it worthy is the treatment and characterization.

Treatment: Crisp, clean, not dragging.

Characterization:

Making a village story (that too two villages) with limited characters is not an easy job. Most of Tamil Villages stories revolve around so many characters such as uncles, great grandparents, cousins, etc etc. Kalavaani forgoes that. I should give full marks for the director for using limited no of characters.

Saranya gets 200 Marks for her performance as sweet, innocent mom, which she usually does it with perfection. Saranya is indispensable when it comes to Mother roles. It is highly impossible to imagine someone else in her role.

Secondly, heroine's brother (New face?). He impresses with a unique body language and dialogue delivery which is quite natural. He gets 100 Marks.

Vimal, as Arikki @ Arivazhagan, has done his part well. Only thing is, few dialogues reminded me of Paruthiveeran. Oviya, has done a fabulous job. Her acting as a girl hailing from a village is so apt.

Then Kanja Karuppu as Mr. Panchayathu, who gets trapped in the plans of Vimal gang. Noteworthy performance from Ganja Karuppu after a long time.

Friends of Arivazhagan have pulled off an excellent performance. One scene that had the whole theater in splits is "Arivazhagan. Mr. Arivazhagan". OMG!

Cinematography: Excellent. Green Paddy fields have been shot so beautifully.

Music: SS Kumaran has done a better job in Background score in first half while songs are big miss. Oru Murai song works because of the picturization and "dumma dumma" hook!

Overall: A perfect movie for family audience. Do not miss it.

Nan Mahan Alla by Yuvan

One of the much awaited albums of the year. Nan Mahan Alla. Karthi-Yuvan, the magical combo of "Paiya" is back

There are only four songs in the album, plus a second version of Va Va nilava, which is as same as the first version.

Hyper catchy "Va Va Nilva" will go well with the audience. A nice song with poetic lyrics and flute interludes. Can't wait to see the picturization. Kids' chorus add a special charm at the end.

Even though parts of orchestration in "Oru Maalai neram" is inspired from Masakkali (Delhi 6, AR Rahman), the song doesn't fail to impress you. A lovable duet, grows better after few listens. Javed Ali and Shilpa being the wrong choices especially Shilpa's rendition is soulless.

Yuvan's innovation comes to the fore with "Iragai Pole". A trendy song with thumping orchestration. It's high time Yuvan stops using the "Auto Tune" which plays the spoilsport.

Madhu Balakrishnan replaces Ilaiyaraja in "Theivam illai" who is Yuvan's regular choice to sing pathos. A passable track with noteworthy lyrics by Yuga Barathi.

Overall, Yuvan never ceases to surprise us with trendy music. Last time it was "Oh Shala" in Kadhal solla vandhen and this time it is "Iragai Pole". Three out of four songs get distinction marks. Nan Mahan Alla is said to be an intense thriller. Songs will gel well with the script.

Most listened songs:

> Elelu Thalaimurai, Idhu Varai - Goa, Yuvan Shankar Raja. Yuvan doing an Ilaiyaraja in the former. Idhu Varai, a mind blowing melody with excellent acoustic drums.

> Happy, Sirikkiren - Bale Pandiya, Devan Egambaram. Happy, A Capella song, is a novel attempt. Sirikkiren is a roller coaster ride.

> Missing Something, Un uyirai - Aridhu Aridhu, S Thaman. Thaman songs for this 'terrorism' based movie, prove show his mettle.

> Usure pogudhe, Kaatu sirikki - Rahman is genius. Usure Poguthey is an extraordinary song in the recent times. Brilliant rendition by Karthik. He sure deserves an award for this song.

> Hosanna, Mannippaaya - Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya. Rahman again. Hosanna a peppy number. Mannippaya, though sounded boring initially, picked up later and became one of my favorite songs of 2010. Poetic lyrics by Thamarai.

> Oh Shala, Anbulla Sandhya - Kadhal Solla Vanthen, Yuvan Shankar Raja. Oh Shala is one of the best songs of the year. I prefer this song mainly for the rhythm part of it. Yuvan in decent form.

> Kan thaakudhe, Oru paithiyam pidikkudhu - Baana Kaathadi, Yuvan Shankar Raja. If you see Yuvan's name in the "Singers" section, then go for it. That should be the best song of the album. Here, Kan thakkudhe is.

> Pookal Pookum tharunam - Madharasapattinam, GV Prakash Kumar. Pookkal pookkum is such a killer song. Roop Kumar's is probably the only minus. Any Tamil singer could have been a better choice.

> Haq Se - Striker - Yuvan Shankar Raja. A hindi song by Yuvan, rendered by himself along with Siddharth. No doubt. The song has all the elements to make it worth listening.

> Kodi Kodi aasaigal - Kavalar Kudiyiruppu, James Vasanthan. A killer song. James Vasanth proves that he is not a one-hit wonder. The first interlude in this song is noteworthy.

Albums of the Six months:

> Goa
> Raavanan
> Aridhu Arudhu

No doubt. The first half of 2010, has been really good and very much satisfying. The second half is even more promising with interesting albums lined up. I'm giving the list of albums that I'm looking forward to, in the coming months.

Upcoming, much awaited albums:

1. Nan Mahan Alla, Yuvan Shankar Raja. Expectations have gone sky high after Yuvan tweeted "Iragu pole in NMA is a killer song".

2. Enthiran - AR Rahman-Shankar-Rajni. Three guns of Tamil Film industry. Terrific trio.

3. Aaranya Kaandam - Yuvan Shankar Raja. The promo stills, the cover story about this film in a popular website, and more importantly, the one minute promising teaser trailer have made me look forward to this album. We may get to hear some instrumentals in this album, like Pudhupettai.

4. Aadhi Bagwan - Yuvan Shankar Raja. Ameer is back with a love story. Should we even bother about the music of Yuvan? Wouldn't that be in par with Mounam Pesiyadhe?

5. Selvaraghavan - GV Prakash combo movie. Yeah, it will take time.

Thillalangadi - Yuvan Shankar Raja, Thaman

Thillalangadi tracks are out. Has 7 tracks in total. There were news doing rounds that Thaman has done two songs. I thought that was a rumor. But it is true. 2 out of 7 songs are composed by Thaman, who did original Kick songs.

"Sol pechu" sung by Chitra, Shreya and Yuvan is perhaps the only good song in the album. A song that reflects two different attitude of a girl who is about to fall in love. Chithra sings for the attitude that says NO to love while Shreya sings the attitude that says YES to love. Fabulous vocals by both of them. This song will be a chart buster once the movie releases.

"Ding Ding", sung by talented Vijay Prakash and Naveen is very much saved by the Kids' lovely chorus. Drum beats in the second interlude is noteworthy. "Memory loss", is a funny song, in the line of Sirikkiren (Bale Pandiya, music by Devan Egambaram). Khailas Kher's singing adds an extra layer of fun. This song may not be remembered for a long time.

"Pattu pattampoochi" sung by Simbu & Manasi Scott is insipid while "Thothu ponen", by Shankar Mahadevan is an obsolete, tune wise, orchestration wise, lyrics wise.

Thaman reuses two of his songs in Kick (Original version of Thillalangadi). "Pootta pathadhum" sung by Suchitra and "Idhayam Karaigiradhu" bu Vardhini are both mundane. The latter is slightly works better because of its tune.

Overall, Thillalangadi turns out to be an average album overall. Don't worry. Yuvan will compensate and satisfy us in Nan Mahan Alla, which is hitting the stores in other few days. Get ready!

Aridhu Aridhu - Music by S Thaman

His Eeram did not impress me much. His Mundhinam Parthene did only to some extent. When everybody went ga-ga over Munthinam Paarthene songs, I felt a little awkward and suspected if the music sense in me was fading! LOL. I still could not enjoy the songs thoroughly. Now, composer S Thaman arrives with Aridhu Aridhu which kindles me to revisit his earlier albums.

Here is my take on his Aridhu Aridhu.

Un Uyirai kollum, sung by talented Karthik is very Rahman-ish in terms of orchestration. The beats that start at the part 'seyalgaL valikkiradhu.......' affirms that. The high point of the track is however, Karthik's soulful rendition and meaningful lyrics, "ஏர்க்கலப்பைகள் ஏங்குதடா...." for instance.

"Missing Something", a seducing melody, seductively sung by Reeta. The overall feel of the song resembles Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply". More of English verses and less of tamil verses, almost make it an English song.

Oh la la li - A peppy number brilliantly rendered by Suchithra. I have never been a fan of her voice in any of her earlier songs. I liked her voice in Pesum Poove (Mundhinam Parthene). Now, I have fallen in love with her voice in this song. A rocking number with thumping music arrangement. Lyrics are my only concern here.

Azhagaai Sirithayada, sung by the film's director Mathivanan, gives a mysterious feel. Mathivanan's singing is not convincing. The song would have reached greater heights if Thaman had roped in a different singer.

Despite the powerful orchestration (Excellent layer works which is more common in Yuvan songs) Kanavugal edhuvarai failed to impress me. and Saturday girlOdu is perhaps the weakest song in this album.

Overall a fantastic album. Go for it.

செம்மொழியான தமிழ்மொழியாம் - உலகத் தமிழ் மாநாட்டிற்காக ஏ ஆர் ரஹ்மான் உருவாக்கி இருக்கும் பாடல்.

தமிழ் மொழியின் சிறப்பினையும், பழம்பெருமையையும் எடுத்துரைக்கும் "செம்மொழி கீதம்" (Semmozhi Anthem) என்று அழைக்கப்படும் இப்பாடல் எப்படி இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும்? ஆனால் எப்படி வந்திருக்கிறது?

'பிறப்பொக்கும் எல்லா உயிர்க்கும்' என TM Soundarajan அட்டகாசமாய் துவக்கி வைக்க, அடுத்த வினாடியே 'யாதும் ஊரே, யாவரும் கேலிர் ('கேளிர்' என்பதே சரி) என பிழையாக உச்சரித்து அதிர்ச்சியளிக்கிறார் ரஹ்மான்.

கார்த்திக், சின்மயி, ஹரிணி, விஜய் ஏசுதாஸ், சுசீலா, என ரம்மியமான குரல்களுடன் பாதி பாடல் பயணிக்க, தவில், நாதஸ்வரம் இணைந்து நம்மைப் பரவசமூட்டும் அந்த தருணத்தில் தான், பெரும் அதிர்ச்சி. மேற்கத்திய Rap இசையுடன் களமிறங்குகிறார் ப்ளாசே (Rap singer Blaze). 'எம்மதமும் ஏற்றுப் புகல்கின்ற (புகழ்கின்ற)' என்று அவர் பாடி நிறுத்த, 'செம்மொலயான தமில்மொலியாம்' என்று ஒரு CHORUS பாடி முடிக்கிறது. அங்கு தடம் மாறி, தடுமாற ஆரம்பிக்கும் தமிழ்மொழி கீதம், கிட்டதட்ட கடைசி வரைக்கும் தடுமாறுகிறது எனபது வேதனை.

தமிழ் மொழியின் பழமையைப் பற்றி பேசும் பாடலின் இசை எவ்வாறு இருந்திருக்கலாம் என்ற எனது கருத்துக்கள்.

> மேற்கத்திய இசை வரும் பகுதி இடைச்செருகல் போல தோன்றுகிறது. தமிழைப் பற்றிய பாடலில், மேற்கத்திய இசையை எதற்கு? தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம்.
> கர்னாடக இசையை வைத்தே முழு பாடலயும் செதுக்கி இருக்கலாம்.
> தமிழ் மொழி உச்சரிப்பில் சிறிது மெனக்கட்டிருக்கலாம்.
> வயலின், வீணை, யாழ், மிருதங்கம் போன்ற இசைக்கருவிகளைப் பயன்படுத்தி, பாடலை அலங்கரித்திருக்கலாம்.

> SP Balasubramaniam, S Janaki, KJ Yesudoss போன்றவர்கள் பாடாதது எனக்கு மிகப்பெரிய குறையாகவே தோன்றுகிறது.

இறுதியாக, பாடல் கேட்டு முடிக்கும்போது, ஏற்படவேண்டிய 'என் தமிழ் மொழி' எனும் உணர்வு, ஏற்படாமலே போய்விடுவது ஏமாற்றம்.

ஆக, செம்மொழி கீதம் என்னைக் கவரவில்லை. ரஹ்மானிடம் எதிர்ப்பார்த்தது இது அல்ல. பெரும் எதிர்ப்பார்ப்புடன் இருந்த எனக்கு, ஏமாற்றமே மிஞ்சியது :-(

இத்தனையும் தாண்டி இதனை ரசிக்க வைக்கும் சில அம்சங்கள்:

> 30 பாடகர்கள், இசை அமைப்பாளர்களின் அணிவகுப்பு .

> தமிழகத்தின் பெருமை வாய்ந்த இடங்களை அழகாய் படம் பிடித்திருக்கும் ஒளிப்பதிவு.

> கௌதம் மேனனின் இயக்கம்.

இசையை பற்றி மட்டுமே பேச விழைந்ததால், காட்சியமைப்பைப் பற்றி அதிகம் எழுதவில்லை.

Kadhal Solla Vandhen, is an upcoming movie directed by Bhoopathy Pandiyan that has Balaji of Kana Kaanum Kalangal in the lead. The film was earlier titled Naan Avalai sandhitha pozhudhu.

There are totally five tracks.

"Oh Shala" song is the best in this album. A scintillating song with foot tapping beats. Lyrics by Saradhi (newbie?), seamlessly blend with the tune. Yuvan's rendition enhances the charm of the song. If picturized well, the song can become a massive hit among the audience. The song is simple with three basic notes in the pallavi. Yuvan has beautifully shuffled the tunes to form Charanam. First interlude is noteworthy.

Enna Enna aagiren sung by Vijay Yesudoss is an excellent melody with nice lyrics. "Kadhal Silai ondru........." part in Enna aagiren song is awesome. The song has the potential to become super hit. Oru Vanavillin a passable track is completely spoiled by Udit.

Charanam parts in "Anbulla Sandhiya" more than compensate for it's lackluster start in Pallavi. This song is supposed to give a haunting feel to the listeners, but fails miserably.

Experimental track of this album arrives with "saami varugdhu kadhal samy varugudhu", a thiruvizha kind of song (not exactly of this genre) sung by poosari. The song reminds us of various Iyappan songs that we get to hear in during the season. Make no mistake. Only the use of Udukkai makes you feel so. This song has ultimately funny lyrics. Selecting a real Poosari to render this song is a good move. The song can rock B and C center audience.

Yuvan's score for this less popular movie is excellent. Two great songs. Worth going for!

Vasanthabalan's Angadi Theru - A must visit street

Angadi Theru, the descriptive title says it all. Yes, it is the tale of a couple who works for a famous Textile Store in T Nagar.

Story:

Jothilingam (Akhil), a guy who hails from a village ‘Ittamozhi’, comes to Chennai to work in a Textile Store as a salesman. That owes to the sudden demise of his father in an accident. There he meets the floor supervisor Kani (cho chweet ‘Anjali’). Their meet starts with a fight and soon turns into love. Love blossoms between the couple. Another couple in the same store, who loved each other, faces a tragic end. Will the lead couple, who are terrorized by this incident, unite?

As far as the story and screenplay are considered, this is certainly a feather in director Vasantha Balan’s crown. The screenplay in the first half works so beautifully while the sequences in the second half are quite predictable.

The first scene of this movie is symbolic. But it has been shown in a way that audiences realize it only as they reach the end. Well done Vasanthabalan. There are so many brilliant, poetic, emotional scenes in the movie. For instance, the scene where younger sister of Akhil, who is longing to see his brother, asks for the ‘Senthil Murugan Stores’ labeled bag from a lady, in her village. Brilliant. The love between Akil and Anjali has been portrayed so beautifully, especially in the songs.

Talking about the performance, everybody has done their parts well that includes the lead pair, Akhil’s friend who provides the comic part and his girlfriend, the floor in-charge Karungali. However, the best of these performances is undoubtedly from Anjali, who stuns the audience with her realistic performance. With her expressive eyes and girl next door look, she has done a fabulous job in acting. Akhil, though, has done his part well, needs a little improvement in facial expressions.

Songs are excellent. GV Prakash’s ‘Un perai sollumbodhe’, Vijay Antony’s “Aval appadi ondrum” are soothing to ears and the songshave been picturized beautifully. However, the background score is not effective. Cinematography is excellent.

Of course, this cannot be called a flawless movie. The movie has its minus points. To quote a few,

The second half is predictable. Though the friend of Akhil provides a comic relief, we have seen such characters in of movies. The tragic second half is supposed to create a shock in audience. But it doesn’t really.

Overall: The impact of the lighter first half is more than the impact of the tragic second half. I’m not a big fan of Vasantha balan’s Veyil. I thought he was overrated. He proves me wrong with his Angadi Theru. Looking forward to his next venture.

Baana - Yuvan Shankar Raja

A Yuvan album after a long time!

'Thaakudhe kan thakkudhe' sung by Yuvan himself, is peppy song with very good music. This is not Yuvan's usual way of singing. He has tried something different here. Lyrics by Vaali deserves a special mention.

The best song in the album is "Paithiyam pudikkudhu penne". A lovely melody with beautiful lyrics. However, the feel of the song is completely spoiled by the use of 'auto tune'. The CD Cover says that the song is sung by Karthik. But one can hardly recognize his voice. Singer Karthik is known for the 'feel' adds to melodies. That's completely missing here. The Piano bits in the prelude, interlude and postlude is awesome.

'En nenjil', sung by Sadhana Sargam is just an ordinary song. The tune isn't really Yuvan'ish. Though Sadhana has done her part well, I personally feel, Shreya Goshal would have been a better choice for this song.

Kuppathu rajakkal is very average and that reminds you of Goa title track. The insane lyrics in the item number 'Ullara poondhu paaru', sung by Roshini, can easily turn you off.

Overall: Not a convincing album. I'm disappointed. Yuvan could have done it better.

Ravanan - AR Rahman's Musical

Hindi Ravan songs are out. Ravan turns out to be a stunning album from our Academy Award Winner! Simply out-of-the-world compositions with several new instruments and sounds. Rahman is genius.

Behene de muje, Katta Katta, Khile Re and Ranja Ranjha are my hot favorites. Addicted to these songs. I'm very much looking forward to the Tamil version 'Ravanan'. Just cannot wait to hear Shreya Goshal's voice in "Khili Re". I bet. This song will be more beautiful in Tamil. Such a melody it is.

I'm trying my best to avoid listening to the Hindi version as I'm more interested in it's Tamil version. Listening to Hindi version first will naturally put Tamil version one step below. Nah... I don't want this to happen.

Eagerly waiting for 'Raavanan'!

I thought I should write an article about my love for ‘Lord’ Sachin Tendulkar when he hit 200 to raise the bar high. The right time is here now.

First of all, Congratulations Dhoni and Team for winning the trophy!

Ever since IPL began in 2008, I have been a full-time supporter for Mumbai Indians only for the ‘Sachin’ factor. Though he’d disappointed me in first two seasons, he has more than compensated in third season. He was on the roll since the first match. There has not been a single match where he got out without a boundary. Every match had moments that raised my eyebrows to express awe.

I have been a Sachin admirer, ever since the day I came to know about this genius. The admiration has never gone down, rather, increased day by day. Though I love watching Indian cricket matches, I’m confined to sachin’s game that no of minutes I sit and fix my eyes on TV is equal to the no of minutes Sachin stays on the crease.

I should admit that I’m admiring the Lord now, more than ever. His form in this IPL and his unparalleled 200* are the main reasons ;) From a ‘Fan’, I have moved to the next level ‘Devotee’. His form in this IPL has been wonderful. He has not only been a captain in this series. He has been a good leader. He has led the team to Finals. He has been a good motivator. His motivation has helped youngsters like Rayudu, Tiwari, Pollard to come up with match winning performances. Atop all these, he has scored 618 runs in only 15 innings that shows that he is the Best Batsman in this series. In all the ways, Sachin has raised the bar high and set example for others.

His commitment and dedication were on full display when he played a fantastic innings (48 runs) with stitches and plasters in two fingers. That says it all. He is the BEST.

Sachin, you may have lost the game. But you have won our hearts. We love you forever….forever…

Bale Pandiya - Devan Ekambaram's impressive debut!

Devan Ekambaram, who has been a singer and occasional actor (Parthiban Kanavu, Unnale unnale), makes his debut as a music director in Bale Pandiya, an impressive album with some addictive numbers.

The pick of the album for me is "Happy", a capella song. The interesting aspects of this song are, the song has no music in the background, sung by 20 singers and the lyrics by Thamarai. A good amount of innovation has gone in. As the title implies, this song is sure to make listeners 'Happy' ;-) ;-)

'Sirikkiren', instrumental (Violin) version is a rocking stuff while the actual song is quite a fun to listen. Aaradha kobamillai and Kangale Kamalalayam are neat melodies with mild orchestration, excellently rendered by Raman Mahadevan and Mahalakshmi Iyer (Oh. We missed you) in the former and Unnikrishnan and Mrinalini in the latter.

The other two songs Ivan Thedal and the Title track 'Bale Paandiya' did not appeal to me in first few listens.

Overall, a very nice album. Considering that this is his debut, Devan Ekambaram has done an excellent job. Strongly recommended.

Madharasapattinam - Music by GV Prakash

Madharasapattinam, is a period film that is set in the backdrop of pre-independence India. Considering the fact that period films are rare in Tamil Industry, the expectations for this album was really high. Here's my take on this album.

'Vamma Duraiamma' sung by Udit Narayanan, Cochin Hanifa (late), is a hilarious song where Udit explains an English woman (Amy Jackson), the tradition, practices, and kindness of Tamilnadu and Tamilians, while Haneefa (sounds like a tourist guide) takes care of translating it to Amy. The highlight of this song is clearly the 'literal' translation of Haneefa. Thoroughly enjoyable. This song should rock once the movie releases. We miss you Hanifa sir :-(

With a lengthy flute interlude and impeccable orchestration, lovely melody 'Pookkal Pookum tharunam', easily becomes the pick of the album. Roopkumar, though gives an excellent feel, is yet to get his diction fully right. OTOH, Harini rocks. The sudden shift to English verse (sung by Andrea) is noteworthy. 'Thaana thom thanana' piece is the highlight of this song.

'Kaatrile katrile', sung by Hariharan fails to impress despite the neat fusion of (old) 'Vandhe matram' in the interlude. The choice of singers in 'Megame Meghame' (sung by MSV, Vikram & Nasser) evokes an interest but the song falls flat.

Aaruyire Aaruyire is yet another beautiful melody with soulful rendition from Sonu Nigam and Saindhavi. The orchestration reminds me of some ARR works (though, there is nothing direct).

The 'Dance Theme', with the strains of "pookkal pookum' is likable while the other theme 'Feel of Love' is simply mesmerizing.

Talking about the Lyrics department, Na. Muthukumar (one of my favorite lyricists) has penned all the songs. Not outstanding. There are hardly any new lyrics in the songs. How many times are we gonna hear 'nee illaiyel nan illaiyE, nee pOgum anbe, nAn saagiren' kind of lyrics. Wake up Muthu ;) You can do better. I know ;) .

Verdict: A decent soundtrack. GV Prakash Kumar, could have worked more to make it a memorable album. Period film gives a wonderful opportunity to experiment and explore. GVP has not used this opportunity to the full extent.

Paiya by Lingusamy - An Entertaining Cliche!

Paiya is a very good entertainer with good amount of romance, action, humor, excellent songs.

Plot:
Karthi, a job seeker, sees Tamanna in Bangalore and falls in love with her. One day, he takes the car to railway station to pick up his friend (the owner of the car). There, he happens to meet Thamanna again with a villain. Thinking that Karthi is a taxi driver, the villain calls him for a trip to Chennai. On the way, when Villain gets out of the car in a petrol bunk, Tamannah asks Karthi to drive away before the Villain returns. There begins the lovable journey. The couple go on for a journey from Bangalore to Mumbai. The obstacles they face in the journey form the crux.

Performance:
Karthi delivers a superb, lovable performance. Some of his expressions give us a feel that he is still stuck with Paruthiveeran. The complete transformation hasn't come yet. However, he does this role with ease. Thamannah as Charu looks gorgeous on screen and does her role perfectly. The girl in Karthi's friends gang catches our attention.

It was reported that Milind Soman has a vital role in this movie. What's that. LOL. He comes hardly for few scenes. Delivers some hindi dialogues and gets beaten by Karthi at the end. He has been wasted.

Villains usually shout in high decibel that tortures our hears. That is completely missing in Paiya which is indeed a good relief.

Technically:

Brilliant music by Yuvan, takes the movie to next level and makes it more entertaining. His songs have been placed aptly. We could hear a huge screaming, whistles from the audience for every single song. Kudos to Yuvan Shankar Raja. Suthudhe suthudhe song has been picturized with beautiful set by Art Director Rajeevan. Cinematography is okay.

Minuses:
There are many. To quote a few, same old story, predictable second half, too much of heroism. There is a scene near toll gate. Karthi and Tamahha on one side of the Toll gate, the villain gang is on the other side. The way Karthi escapes from the sight of the gang is ridiculous and damn silly. There are quite a few such scenes.

However, Thamanna and Yuvan make it worth watching. 80% of the movie happens in traveling that adds a special charm.

Overall: Go for it! First half is a high-way ride while second half has 'men at work. go slow' board at times. Good journey overall.

Vinnai thaandi Varuvaaya by Goutham Menon

Summary:
A feel good movie with nice twist in the climax. Technically this is again a typical Gautham Vasudev Menon movie, with stunning visuals, cool picturization of songs and scintillating songs and background score. Slick and stylish overall.

Plot:
Simbu falls in love with Trisha, who is from an orthodox Malayalam Christian family. Simbu is passionate about directing and movie and joins as Asst. Director to K S Ravikumar (Guest role). Trisha's family opposes her love (No prize for guessing this :-p ). Simbu goes on pursuing his director career. Does the couple unite? Go watch it!

Performance:
Simbu surprisingly delivers a fabulous performance. His performance is something we'd been missing for years. Trisha is neither a plus nor a minus. She does her role perfectly but that isn't a show stealer. Ganesh, who comes as a helping friend for Simbu made a good effort in terms of realistic performance. However, I feel, Santhanam or Vivek would have been an apt choice for that kind of role. No offense.

Treatment:
There is nothing new in the story of Vinnai thandi varuvayaa. Screenplay could have been faster and dialogues were not so intense. Disappointing. First half is boring and second half is much better than first half. Climax is out-of-the-world. Too many songs that affect the pace of the movie.

Technically:
Yup. You guessed it right. AR Rahman is the real hero of the movie. His background score in first half simply elevates the movie and enthralls the audience. Songs have already become super hits. Picturization of song is good and is typical GVM stuff. Nothing new. I get a feel that he's getting monotonous in terms of song picturization. Cinematography is absolutely delightful. Kudos to the technical crew.

Overall:
A satisfying movie. The last 20 mins made me sit up and the twist was really unexpected. Many said that they were bowled over and the movie had a big impact on them. Hmmm. I did not feel any such impact. I liked it. I was not blown away. Vinnai thandi varuvaya is certainly not a 'movie to be avoided'.

Final Verdict: Not a disappointing movie. You can go for it.

நூறு முறைக்கு மேல் கேட்ட ஒரு பாடலை, ஒரு குறிப்பிட்டத் ~~தருனத்தில்~~ தருணத்தில் கேட்க நேரிடும். அதற்கு முன் தராத பரவசத்தை அந்த பாடல் அந்த ~~தருனத்தில்~~ தருணத்தில் தரக்கூடும். அந்த ~~தருனம்~~ தருணம் ஒரு மழை நாளாகவோ, பயணத்தின் ஒரு நிமிடமாகவோ, அந்தி மாலையாகவோ, அமைதியான நள்ளிரவாகவோ இருக்கலாம். தினமும் பார்க்கும் காதலி திடிரென ஒரு நாள் மிக அழகாய் தோன்றுவாளே, அது போல தான்.

அப்படி ஒரு பாடலைப் பற்றி தான் இங்கு பேச இருக்கிறேன். 'யாரோடு யாரொ' என்று தொடங்கும் யோகி படப்பாடல் தான் அது. இந்த பாடலை, சுமார் 100 முறைக்கு மேல் கேட்டிருந்தாலும், அதற்கு முன் கிடைக்காத ஒரு தனி சுகத்தை ஓரிரவு அனுபவிக்க முடிந்தது. நேர்த்தியான இசை, மயிலறகாய் வருடும் பாடல் வரிகள், பாடல் முழுவதும் இழையும் சாரங்கியின் ஒலி, என பரவசமூட்டுகிறது இப்பாடல்.

'வஞ்சம் கொண்ட நெஞ்சம் உருகுது கொஞ்சம்' என்ற வரிகளுடன் அமர்க்களமாய் பயணிக்கத் துவங்கும் சாரங்கி, பல்லவியின் முடிவில் வரும் Chorus-ஐ ~~இருக்கி~~ இறுக்கி அணைத்துக்கொள்கிறது. பல்லவிக்கும், முதல் சரணத்திற்கும் இடையில் வரும் Interlude -இல் இழையும் சாரங்கி, இதயத்தை துளைத்து எடுக்கின்றது. விவரிக்க முடியாத இன்பம் அது. இவை அனைத்திற்கும் பக்கபலமாக, உஸ்தாத் சுல்தானின் ஆலாபனை.

'முதலும் இல்லாமல், முடிவும் இல்லாமல்' என high-scale-இல் எடுத்து, அடுத்த வினாடியே, 'காலம் புதிர்களை போடுதே' என இறங்கும் இடத்தில், யுவன், தன்னால் ஒரு மெலடியை எப்படி எல்லாம் கையாள முடியும் என்பதை நிரூபிக்கிறார்.

யுவனின் குரலையும், பாடும் விதத்தையும் தவிர்த்துப் பார்த்தால், இந்த பாடல், ஒரு 'மிகச்சிறந்த பாடல்' என்பதில் ஐயம் இல்லை.

Vinnai Thandi Varuvaaya - Music by AR Rahman

Sorry for the delay writing this. Few songs took time to grow. I was initially very much disappointed. But now, I'm feeling much better though I feel that the album is not very addictive as I expected it to be.

What ARR has done in Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya is, he has gone beyond the boundary of regular Tamil albums and has given us some fresh sounds and music. Or I can even say that there are some new genre of music. This is not a run-of-the-mill romantic album which we expect from Goutham Menon movies. This is something different.

Delightful Hosanna with catchy rap bits from Blaze and fantastic rendition by Vijay Prakash (Man, he will head towards a great success if utilized properly by Tamil composers), peppy Omana penne with magical Nadaswaram sound in the background that showcases ARR's creativity and the adorable chorus which is quite usual in all ARR albums, are certainly treat to ears.

The magical Aromale which is sung by Alphonse is yet another unusual song with Malayalam lyrics written by Kaithapram. This one seems to be a marriage song. So get ready for a visual treat when it comes on the screen. The chorus "Swasthi swathi" has the stamp of AR Rehman.

It is Shreya's divinely voice that impressed me first in Mannippaya song. Rahman, beautifully incorporates couple of Thirukkural in this song. However, the way they've been tuned isn't completely satisfying. I would say that ARR has not sung his parts well. This is certainly a stunner.

Anbil Avan is good with the traditional while Kannukkul sounds average to me except the catchy chorus that chips in. Vinnai thandi varuvaya, the title track sung by Karthi is the only song that did not impress me even after multiple listening. Felt like the song was merely dragging even though Karthi has sung it soulfully.

Every song has some magic in it which is sure to attract the audience.

Overall - I'm very much confused whether to call it an outstanding album or an above average album. Torn between.

Venkat Prabhu's Goa - A Boring holiday trip

Chennai 28 gave us a fresh feel. People loved it. Saroja's screenplay was very much entertaining even though there was nothing new in terms of story. Premgi, Shiva were excellent in Saroja. But in goa, everything fails miserably. Poor screenplay, same old mokkai, dud jokes, same face expression from Premgi, repeating the same style of using Ilayaraja's song when guys meet their girls. Oh my god! Give me a break! Cannot tolerate this anymore!

The story that progresses aimlessly, boring screenplay that lacks continuity, made this trip a forgettable one.

Solace of the movie:
> Sampath's role was good and he'd done it really well.
> Jai's English - In one scene where guys decide to speak only in English, Vaibhav asks Jai for a towel. He asks in English "Towel Come" for which Jai looks at the towel and says "Towel Go"! ROTFL. But sad that there were only few such scenes that evoked laughter.
> Yuvan's music
> Sakthi's Cinematography.

Boring Factors:
> Premgi's mokkais
> Three heroines - Hardly 20 mins for each. Though they did their parts well, there was no scope at all.
> Too many songs. Imagine 8 songs in a already boring screenplay.
> Almost 90 minutes of the movie were aimlessly shot. Filled with too much of meaningless mokkais.
> Using Ilayaraja's song frequently. :banghead:

Overall - A trip that should not be remembered. Very sorry Ms. Soundharya Rajnikanth!

Yuvan's debut in Bollywood is interesting

Finally, our Yuvan Shankar Raja makes his debut in Bollywood. He has composed one song for the Siddharth starrer "Striker". The movie has 6 composers tuning the songs including the most happening composers like Amit Trivedi, Preetam, Blaaze. Though his debut is not big, he makes a good use of the opportunity provided.

"Haq Se" is the song composed by Yuvan. Yuvan himself has sung it along with Siddharth. The song has a peppy feel to it with interesting beats in the background. Yuvan has tuned it very carefully that the song doesn't carry a South Indian flavor. Just my opinion. Job well done!

I cannot comment much on this song or the rendition as I'm devoid of Hindi Film Music! Musically this is a good song!

Hope Yuvan makes it big in Bolly with this song!

Gorgeous, Overwhelming, Astonishing 'Goa' - Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja

One of the most awaited soundtracks is out. Yuvan-Venkat Prabhu combo is back with a bang.

The breezy duet "Idhu Varai" has a gorgeous tune to it, superbly sung by Andrea and Ajeesh, the winner of Airtel Super Singer 2009. A striking melody with a mind-blowing orchestration and scintillating interludes, that showcase Yuvan's versatility.

"Kadhal endral" sung by composer himself is a shorter version of "idhu varai". Yuvan, the king of bit songs, proves it again here. This song has an interesting Violin prelude and has soothing keyboard in the background. The peppy title track "Goa" has youthful feel to it with a flawless music arrangement. The club mix version is equally appealing, however, i did not listen to the club mix version as I'm addicted to the original version.

"Ezhezhu Thalamurai", the village, folk'ish track is overwhelming. Yuvan has done an Ilayaraja in this song. The foot tapping thiruvizha song "adida naiyandi" is another IR'ish track with lively orchestration that adds charm. SPB Charan and Yugendhiran have done their part well in this song. The pathos song "Ooru nalla ooru" sung by Ilayaraja isn't that appealing except for the orchestration and the flute interlude that make it worth listening.

Creative hunger Yuvan arrives with the astonishing "Idai Vazhi", one of the most experimental tracks in recent times. A fast paced erotic song with incredibly brilliant orchestration and excellent vocals by Mamta Mohandas and Benny Dayal. The former does it with perfection.

Thanks to Yuvan for bringing the veterans SPB, IR and Chitra together in the peppy song "Valiba va va". The song so beautifully switches to classical music in the second half. The "na na na na" humming that comes in between is hyper-catchy.

Verdict: What an album to start the year! Yuvan starts 2010 with an extraordinary note. Looking forward to more and more.

This is a song review. I'm writing about a song that had an impact on me over the past two days. The interesting part here is that the album has not come out yet. Likely to be released this week.

The song is all about the musical family. Lyrics of Gangai Amaren proudly tells us about their native village 'Pannaipuram', mom 'Chinna thaayi", elder bro "Pavalar" and obviously about their music which has been an inseparable part of their family. There is nothing new in this song except the freshness and the feel that it gives you. There have been surfeit of songs of this type from Ilayaraja over the past three decade. If someone listens to this song without any idea about the composer, he would certainly end up concluding that this is by Ilayaraja. Yes. Yuvan has almost done an Ilayaraja here. Yet, this song stands out for some reasons.

The idea of making the siblings sing this song definitely showcases the togetherness in them. Lyrics and rendition are the best part of this song.

A song that should not be missed, especially if you are an Ilayaraja or Yuvan fan. You may listen to the song online here.

Unlike 2008, 2009 has turned out to be a musical year with back to back musical hits. I believe there have been atleast 20+ good albums. I really could not arrive at a list of 10 good songs as there were too many good songs. A tough job indeed.

Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai music is Brilliant and Innovative, yet, Average

With a mysterious prelude and astonishing vocals of Vijay Yesudoss and Vinaitha, 'En Asai ethiraliye' easily becomes the pick of the album along with Poo Muthal sung by the composer himself. The mysterious feel continues to haunt in the former while interesting lyrics and cool rendition from Yuvan elevate the latter. Yuvan clearly brings the attitude of a playboy in this voice.

However, the most innovative track of this album is, "En jannal vandha katre" sung by three female singers. With the same base tune, Yuvan gives three different styles of music to explain the character of each girl in this movie. Starts off with a gorgeous melody (with interesting anu pallavi), that soon changes to a hip-hop kind of song then ends with a rocking kuthu song. The music during the transition of each song is simply brilliant and doesn't affect the flow. That's Yuvan for you!

Despite the brilliant vocals from Ranjith and interesting interludes, the melody "Oru punnagai thaane" fails to make an impact as the main tune is boring and flows aimlessly. You really do not get hooked to the title song even despite it's groovy orchestration.

The short "Introduction" is all about Yuvan's music for this movie. Aah.. This is something new that no one else has tried before. Thumbsup Yuvan.

Overall, a satisfactory album for Yuvan fans. We have to wait and see if our audience will prefer it. Brilliant and innovative. Yet, fails to create a big impact.

Movie Review: Yogi - A Shameless remake of Tsotsi.

Yogi is definitely one of the good movies of the year. With a good screenplay, brilliant direction in few scenes, excellent performance, wonderful cinematography and stunning background score, Yogi is certainly worth watching.

Plot: The story is all about, how the life of a slum dweller (a ruthless human, played by Ameer) changes when a baby comes into his life. That's the one liner.

Yogi is more of Ameer's than Subramaniam Siva. On seeing the movie, the narrating style, the camera angle, one can easily say that the brain behind these is Ameer. There were some brilliant scenes which evoke emotion to the audience. Ameer and Madhumitha's performance were excellent and laud-worthy. Ameer shined well as an actor.

The biggest plus here is Yuvan Shankar Raja's background music. Brilliant music. His music conveyed the emotion so beautifully in some scenes. Background score of Yogi is sure to take Yuvan one step further. Kudos!

The biggest minus point is that the movie is almost a ''frame-by-frame' remake of South African movie "Tsotsi". Shamelessly copied. Though there were rumors that this movie is inspired from tsotsi, I was confident that Ameer would not take that route. But it was a complete shock to me that the whole movie is a rip off. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!The moment I saw the set up of Ameer's house in the movie, I could guess the amount of plagiarism. About 70 minutes of Yogi are lifted from Tsotsi. Why they couldn't copy more than 70 minutes? Because, Tsotsi runs only for 90+ minutes. LOL. It's a sin to copy Tsotsi without mentioning any credits. Tsotsi is a classic. The movie has to be experienced. Now that I have watched Yogi, I want to watch Tsotsi once again, to nullify the sin.

Trivia: The movie is gonna be screened in Dubai Film Festival where there will be juries from all over the world. Wondering how Ameer is gonna manage them. Is Ameer aware of this fact that the movie is copied? Or it is Sub Siva who the real culprit is? Let's see!

If someone say Yuvan Shankar Raja is not in his best form this year, it is obvious that they had not listened to songs from ‘Paiyaa’. The music composer has come out with a beautiful album in association with Lingusamy, which has five scintillating songs that make you fall in love as soon as you listen to them.

Lending ample support to Lingusamy’s claim that the Karthi-Tamannah starrer would be a racy and breezy entertainer, the songs by Yuvan set the perfect mood besides raising the levels of expectation on the movie.

1. Adada Mazhaida - Listen here
Singer: Rahul Nambiar, Saindhavi

Reminding you ‘Dhavani Potta Deepavali…’ from ‘Sandakozhi’ is ‘Adada Mazhaida…’ The song by Rahul Nambiar and Saindhavi sounds good and creates a peppy mood. Saindhavi's rendition towards the end is noteworthy. Yuvan’s folk template works well.

2. En Kadhal Solla - Listen here
Singer: Yuvan

It touches the soul straight away. Yuvan, as usual, excels in orchestration particularly in the first interlude. The humming part that comes mildly in the background in between is addictive. Yuvan has improved a lot in rendition, one can say by all means.

3. Poongatre Poongatre - Listen here
Singer: Benny Dayal

A catchy tune, ‘Poongatre Poongatre’ gives a mesmerizing feeling living true to the lyrics. Benny Dayal’s rendition adds value to the lyrics. The song has got all ingredients to strike a chord with younger generation.

4. Suthudhe Suthudhe - Listen here
Singer: Karthik, Sunitha Sarathy

The cream of the soundtrack is ‘Suthudhe Suthudue’. The song, which starts in an ordinary note, picks up soon and enthralls as it progresses. The ‘ra-ra-ra-radhe’ bit is awesome and is sure to be hummed by the audience in the coming days.

5. Thuli Thuli - Listen here
Singer: Haricharan, Tanvi

The song is so beautifully rendered by Haricharan and Tanvi. The music in the beginning and the ’sel sel avaludan sel’ part is too good, though they remind of me some catchy earlier songs. The tune and Na Muthukumar's lyrics complement each other.

Overall, 'Paiyaa' strikes an instant chord with all qualities to top the charts. In other words, Lingusamy has extracted the best from Yuvan.

Music Review: Paiya - A Yuvan Musical

Wow............................

Well, this is how I can begin.. I'm so excited after listening to Paiya songs. A beautiful album filled with romantic melodies.

Beautiful Guitar opens up the lilting melody "Thuli Thuli mazhaiyai", so beautifully rendered by the upcoming young talent Haricharan (Yeah. The voice that we heard in "arabu naadE" song). The tune and Na. Muthukumar's lyrics complement each other. 'Sel sel avaludan sel' part is too good in this song and that's the highlight of this song.

"Suthudhe Suthudhe bhoomi" starts off pretty ordinarily but soon picks up and enthralls you as it progresses. What else can I say when there is Karthik? He definitely elevates the song to greater heights. The lines "ra ra ra radhE, radhE, azhagiya raadhE" are sure to be hummed by the audience in the coming days.

"En Kadhal solla" sung by composer himself is another brilliant melody with excellent rhythm. Yuvan, as usual, excels in orchestration particularly in the first interlude. The chorus/humming part that comes mildly in the background in between is addictive. I have not been a big fan of Yuvan's rendition rather I complaint a lot. LOL. But this time, I must say that Yuvan has improved a lot in rendition. He has given a very good feel especially in the charanam parts. Do not miss to observe the way he sings 'Yaarum paarkkamal enai paarkkiren' in the second stanza. Mesmerizing. Touches my soul!

There isn't anything new in "Adada Mazhai da" song. It simply gives you the feel of listening to "Dhavani potta" song. Tried and tested orcehstration. Yuvan simply recycles his earlier works in this. But, the song sounds good and creates a peppy mood. Rahul nambiyar's rendition is too good and Saindhavi's rendition towards the end is another highlight of this song.

The only song that failed to impress me is "Poongatre poongatre" sung by Benny Dayal. Not a bad one though. A passable track with very less innovations.

Overall, Paiya is an instantly likable album. Linguswamy has extracted some excellent melodies from Yuvan. Yuvan, who usually goes overboard in orchestration even for a simple melody has refrained from it in Paiya. Orchestration here is very simple and catchy. The songs are sure shot winner. Barring the few recycling works, the album is very much satisfactory. Go get it. Drench in the rain!

PS: Writing a very detailed review after a long time. This is purely because of the excitement that I got after listening to the songs. Except 'Poongatre" all other songs are in loop for since Saturday. Just cant get me out of this. Very addictive!

PS2: Yeah, I know, some of you may feel that I'm overrating this album. LOL. Just my opinion. At least for next few months I will be madly listening to the songs. Isn't that enough? He... He...

Yuvan's Paiya

At last, the much awaited Yuvan's Paiya albums is out. Linguswamy has managed to get some good stuffs from Yuvan. Youthful songs. Two cool melodies.

Here is a Short take:

> Thuli thuli mazhayai - Absolutely a delightful melody sung by Haricharan. Haricharan-Yuvan combo rocks. Awesome song. Sure shot winner.
> Poongatre Poongatre sung by Benny Dayal. A Fast paced melody.
> Suthudhe Suthudhe bhoomi. Karthik's rendition is a big plus.
> En kadhal solla is another pick of the album sung by Yuvan. Minimal yet beautiful orchestration.
> Adada mazhaida is the only song where Yuvan recycles his own Dhavani Potta song.

Overall: Very decent album with romantic melodies.

Music Review: Yogi by Yuvan Shankar Raja

At last the wait ends. Yogi album is out. Soundtrack has 6 tracks in total including two theme music.

Yogi theme in Sarangi is the pick of the album. A brilliant music with wonderful orchestration. Ustad's vocals that comes in between, leaves us haunted. Another amazing number is Yaaradu Yaaro sung by Yuvan himself which has outstanding orchestration with mind-blowing Sarangi interludes and meaningful lyrics by Snehan.

Despite the aversion I have for folk/kuthu songs, I liked the remix (of various old songs) Seermayvum Koovathila, sung by Lyricist Snehan. It's the change in the beats, thappu sound that impressed me. The short "Yogi theme" proves that Yuvan is the king of theme music. Another feather in his cap.

The hero glorifying number Yogi yogi thaan (Ver I and Ver II) is the only track that did not invoke any interest even though they are good orchestration wise. It may take sometime grow I believe.

Overall, Yuvan has given what Yogi needs. Yuvan's idea of using Sarangi as the main instrument in all songs (in BGM also if my guess is right) is laud-worthy. Hats off!

Movie Review: Kandhasaamy

At last, the much awaited movie of the year is out! Here's my take on Kandhasaamy!

Story:

You can compare the story of Kandhaswamy with Sivaji. Yes it is all about black-money and about the saying "Rich get richer, Poor get poorer". Kandhasamy (Vikram), the CBI officer raids the money from the rich and gives it to poor. How? Go watch it!

What's new???

The concept of using God Kandhasamy's name to serve the poor is quite impressive. People tying the prayers written paper on the tree, Vikarm reading all those prayers and answering them in the name of "God Kandhasamy". Good one.

Performance:

As far as acting is considered, Kandhasamy doesn't disappoint. Everybody has done a good job. Just that there wasn't enough scope for Vikram to showcase his talents.

What's good?

The second half is far better than the boring, rubbish first half. The Mexico episode in second half is very much satisfying with interesting twists, suspense elements, outstanding Camerawork and Vikram's performance. In fact I would rather say that Mexico episode was the only relief for me. Krishna (father of Telugu Superstar Maheshbabu) who comes as senior officer for Vikram, impressed with his short but sweet role. He did a great job.

What plays spoil-sport?

First half progresses aimlessly. Screenplay sucked. Too much of glamor, skin show from Shreya. Songs that act as Speed-breakers. Vadivel's torture in the name of "comedy" and his disgusting double entendre dialogues too. Sonorous background score that damages our ears.

Verdict: Kandhasamy, a big disappointment! Movie fails to live up to the hype.

Music Review: Aadhavan by Harris Jeyaraj

Much awaited album is out! What does this successful "Harris-Surya" combo have to offer! Let's check it out!

"Hasli-Fasli" is the pick of the album (Probably the only good number). This peppy number with catchy English verses is impressive at first listen itself. Karthik at his best once again! While the passable "Varaayo" sung by Unni Krishnan and Chinmayi, is a trademark melody from Harris. Unni Krishnan seems to have lost enthu. Strangely, his rendering isn't impressive this time. "Yeno Panithuli" flows aimlessly.

"Dheko Dheko" has some impressive music arrangement, but falters tune wise. I like the interludes particularly the second interlude. "Masi Paasi" (Sung by Mano, Mega) and "Damukku Damukku" are forgettable numbers. It's disheartening to hear the versatile singer Mano's voice in the weakest track of the album!

To put it in nutshell, Aadhavan turns out to be a big disappointment! The sound, music, arrangement are very monotonous and thus very very boring! Considering that Harris Jeyaraj's next album will be out only in 2010, Aadhavan music is not enough to fill this gap. Hope we will not forget this composer! :)

Vamanan, 'Following" the path of Plagiarism

Plagiarism and Indian cinema are like two sides of a coin. Plethora of movies have been made in Tamil, Hindi, which were directly lifted from Hollywood or Foreign movies. Some of them are Kadhal Konden (Said to have been a remake of a German Movie), Saroja (Copied from Judgment Night). Debutant Director I. Ahmed's Vamanan is not an exception. This affirms that the Indian Cinema is still following the path of plagiarism.

Some websites reported that the theme of Vamanan has been copied from a Hollywood flick "Following", directed by Christopher Nolan. Caught by Curiosity, I wanted to watch "Following". Watched it. I would rather call it "Lifted". Not just the theme, the scenes, the conversation between hero and villain (Rahman and Jai in Vamanan), the dialogues, the twist in the climax, everything has been ruthlessly lifted by I. Ahmed, a debutant director. What irks me is, Ahmed in an interview said that he has tried a new technique in screenplay which will be a trend setter and many movies would follow this trend. LOL. Ahmed, don't think you are smart. Tamil audience are not fools. You are being watched. Bag it in mind!

'Following-Vamanan' Connection:

Jeremy (Lead actor of Following) follows Alex to find inspiration for his novel.
Jai follows Rahman and contemplates his bodylanguage, style to find inspiration for his acting career.

The conversation between Jai and Rahman in a hotel (When Jai gets caught by Rahman) is exactly the same as the one between Jeremy and Alex in a Cafe when Jeremy gets caught by Alex for same reason.

Alex, a burglar, breaks into the apartments and surfs through the personal matters, diaries, of the residents. That's exactly what Rahman does in Vamanan. Worst part here is, in a scene Rahman takes a sip of Cool drinks in a house and shares the joy of having cool drinks in a house when the family people are not there. Even this dialogue has been lifted.

And last but not the least, the final twist in the climax.

So, I. Ahmed, what do you have to say? What about your next movie?

Aah... one more, Thanks Ahmed. Had you not done this, I would not have watched "Following". A must watch movie! Thanks once again!

Movie Reviews: Muthirai, Vamanan

Just thought of sharing my opinion on these two movies.

Muthirai - A crap movie with some nice twists towards the climax. Yuvan is the real hero of this movie. He's elevated this movie with his amazing background score. Beautiful songs have been picturized pathetically with expressionless Lead heroes. We only get frustrated on seeing Nitin's romance in Azhagaana Neeyum song and Daniel's horrible face expressions in July Madhathil, Uyire Uyire songs. Huh. However, it serves as a nice laughter therapy if you go with your friends as a gang. Muthirai's Background scores have been recorded (good quality) and uploaded by me in Yuvan's freeforums. You can download it from there! Here you go. Do register if you have not done already. :)

Vamanan - A run-of-the-mill plot (which is quite similar to as that of Muthirai) that has been narrated in an entertaining way. Even though the movie (particularly the second half) lacks logic, the first half is very much entertaining with Santhanam and Urvasi providing a great laughter therapy. Santhanam has raised to a newer level in this movie with his rib-tickling comedy. Suspense elements in the movie are quite interesting. Another major plus point is Yuvan's songs and above average background score. All five songs have been placed aptly without disrupting the pace of the screenplay. Jai has done a commendable job. Aravind Krishna's camerawork is awesome! Can watch it once.
PS: It is said that this movie has been inspired from a hollywood flick called "Following". Let me watch that movie and get back to you with proper information.

Pause or Stop?

Hello there,

I'm sad to inform that I would not be available for next couple of weeks as I'm going on a trip to Hyderabad on personal front. I may not be able blog due to lack of access to Internet. I'm expecting couple of good albums by this week or next week. Yogi, Peranmai and few others too.

Also, I'm not sure I would be able to continue blogging after I return as I would become busy on my professional front.

I myself do not know whether this is a pause or a stop. :-( I hope it's the former. Thanks for all your support!

Aayirathil Oruvan - Music Review

Music of "Aayirathil Oruvan", one of the much awaited movies of the year is out and is outstanding. Young composer GVP's compositions in Ayirathil Oruvan is extraordinary. With 10 tracks (including one club mix), the album is definitely a treat to music lovers.

Both the versions of "Thaai thindra Manne" stand out. GV Prakash's knowledge in classical music comes to fore in these songs. Extraordinary compositions with mindblowing lyrics by Vairamuthu. One version is sung by Vijay Yesudoss and the other version is by Vijay Yesudoss and Nithyashree. Singers have added a speacial touch to these songs. Words fail me to describe the pleasure of listening to these songs.

Another such a master piece is "Pemmane" which is absolutely haunting with amazing vocals by Bombay Jayashree and Veteran PB Srinivas. This song gives a mysterious feel especially the laughing sounds of female in the interludes. I got carried away.

You should not just listen to these songs. Experience them. Lyrics of these three songs simply took me to Chola Period. I'm presenting parts of "Pemmaane" lyrics here.

These lines brought tears in my eyes. Hats off to Vairamuthu.

Selva Raghavan's lyrics in the breezy, romantic number "Maalai Neram" outstands. Andrea's rendition fits the mood (just bear her diction in few places). I loved this song mainly for its lyrics.

"Indha Paadhai", sung by composer himself is astonishing with amazing guitar works. GVP does a pretty neat job in singing too. Do not miss the violin that comes for a short duration in the second interlue. Amazing composition.

Theme music kinda stuffs "King Arrives" and "Celebration of Life" are truly master piece from GVP. Wonderful.

The club number "Oh Eesa" starts off well but soon turns out to be noisy. Composer's idea of mixing the tune of "Srinivasa Govinda, Sri venkatesa Govinda" doesn't really sound good. And the hip hop type "Un Mela aasathan is "adada va asathalam" song of Sarvam (which was originally composed by Yuvan for Selvah).

This is certainly one of the BEST ALBUMS in recent years. Stunning from this young chap. GV Prakash, you've made it man. Bow. Kudos to the team. Credits to Selva for extracting the best out of GVP. Eagerly awaiting the movie release. Just cannot wait for it.

Airtel Super Singer show has been the talk of the town in last few months. The grand Finale took place in Chennai today and the three finalists "Renu", "Ajish" and "ravi" performed live.

To put it in a nut shell, it was mind blowing. And the winner of the title is,

Super Singer,

"Ajish".

Of course, this is what many of us would have predicted.

There were two rounds today.

1st round:

Ajish - Ninaithu Ninaithu (7G), Renu - Nenjodu Kalandhidu (Kadhal Konden) and Ravi - Kan munne (Thulluvadho Ilamai). All three performed really well and Renu's song selection wasn't appealing even though she sang it really well.

2nd round:

Ajish - Sangeetha Jaadhi mullai (Kadhal Oviyam), Renu - Hairama (Rangeela) and Ravi - Kallai mattum kandal (Dasa).

Ravi's performance in this round was definitely not his best and it is mainly because of song selection i guess. I was not impressed. But Renu, with her honey soaked voice sang Hairama so so beautifully. It was out-of-the-world singing. Ajish - Wow.... Mind blowing... I would rate his singing in this round as his best till date. Everything was perfect in his singing this time. I usually get disappointed with his voice (nasal voice. Not open singing). But he excelled in this round. Kudos!!!

What disappointed me here was Renu finishing at 3rd place. Even though I knew that she cannot be the winner, i expected her to be the runner. But Ravi took that spot!! However, Ravi deserved that spot for his consistence. He has been the only singer to be consistent throughout the show. Thumbs Up!!!

So what else... We soon can hear Ajish's voice in Yuvan's album.

Congratulations Ajish!! Wish you all the best!!!

Going by what people on the stage spoke, I guess all three finalists would get a chance to sing in Tamil Films. If so, I'm very much happy and i'm eager to hear Renu's voice! Yes, she was my favorite! :-)

Music Review: Kandhaswamy

Kandhasamy is one of the much awaited movies of the year and so is its music. The album has eight tracks in total out of which only two of them are good (not outstanding :P ).

"Excuse Me Mr. Kandhasamy", sung by Suchithra and Vikram is very catchy, mainly for the funny lines and Vikram's rendition. This song is more like a conversation. "Allegra" is more like an English song which is good in terms of music.

"Miya miya poona" is more like rhymes while "idhellm dupe" is nothing but recitation of a written essay. "India ponnu", "Pambara kannale remix (aka en peru meenakumari)", "Mambo Mamiya", "Kantha Kanthasamy" are plain annoying.

I may sound a bit harsh. But then, I wish to share what I feel. Devi Sri Prasad has always been a wrong choice for Tamil Film Music. I loved hardly a few compositions of him in Tamil. Kanthasamy is just another album in that list.

The IPL Fever is Over!!!

Fever over??? How come?? 10 more days to go. Confused? Ha...ha...

I'm an avid cricket fan. In my dictionary Cricket = Sachin. He is the Lord. Sachin Tendulkar's Mumbai Indian is out of IPL now. And that is why the fever is over (for me). I was with absolute aplomb that MI would make it to Semis. Dreams are shattered. I was left in travail when Mumbai Indians suffered the loss at the hands of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings . I was hurt, disappointed.

However, my god's game was brilliant and very much satisfactory in 5 matches especially the one against Kolkata. Fan for life....

Since I'm writing this on a sad note, I do not want to mention about his bad captaincy in few matches.

I would not be watching IPL anymore. It's all over. I would watch the next match of Sachin against Delhi Daredevils, of course for thalaivar's game only.

There is always a next season. Let me wait for a better IPL next year. So, for me, the fever is over, but with a sad note. What about you?

Modhi Vilayadu, music by Colonial Cousins Hariharan, Leslie

Colonial Cousins Hariharan and Leslie's debut as Music Directors is quite promising.

Peppy "Otrai Varthayil" turns out to be pick of the album. Shaan's rendition definitely elevates the song while the duration is the only complaint. The song has only one charanam. Melody "Paadhi Kadhal" is too good with Bombay Jayashree's sweet vocals. Somehow, Sunitha Sarathi's part did not appeal to me even though she has sung it well. Composers' idea of using two female singers did not work for me. Well, I cannot take a call on this without whatching the situation for which this song has been composed. However, the song is good with good lyrics.

Both the above mentioned songs forgo the regular beats that we get to hear from other composers. The background music for these two songs are fresh that makes them instantly likeable.

"Vellaikkari", despite the good charanam parts, failed to impress me. Too many singers for this song creates a mess. Orchestration too is noisy at times. This song may go well with masses, but did not impress me. Fast paced "Sikki mukki" too is an average track. Title track "Modhi Vilayadu" abides by the standard rule "title song should be a noisy kuthu song". Hariharan has roped in Composer Deva to sing along with him, but that doesn't help.

"Latcham Varthaigal", sung by Ranjani, another version of "Otrai Varthaiyil" has got some change in the orchestration, particularly in the interlude. Nice keyboard usage in the interlude. The lyrics have been changed beautifully to fit the situation. Look how beautifully the lyrics convey two different situations.

In the first version (for hero), "Otrai varthayil, otrai vArthayil, uLLE uLLadhai sonnAl enna" while in the second version, heroine sings "Latcham vArthaigal, latcham vArthaigaL, muttrum theerndhana ingE ingE" . Great. Isn't it? I guess the hero version is on a happy note while the latter is on a sad note.

Overall, Modhi Vilayadu gives me a private album like feel. That's good change actually. Two songs stand out while the rest are average.

Music Review: Muthirai (Yuvan Shankar Raja)

Muthirai album was released without any ad / information that eventually made me not to expect much from this album. Surprisingly the album turns out to be a pretty decent album. Usually Yuvan shines well in three/four numbers and falters in the rest. But in Muthirai almost all the songs are good.

With Naresh Iyer's and Manjari's melting vocals, the melody "Azhagana Neeyum" turns out to be the pick of the album. Absolutely delightful song with good lyrics. Manjari's rendition and smooth vocals definitlely add a good feel to the song. Next good number is "Om Shanthi Om", a rock base club number. Powerful orchestration and the superb singing by Neha Bashin makes this song stand out. What surprises me here is the core melody of this club number is too good. Wonderful composition.

"July Maadhathil" sung by Md Aslam, Rahul, Thanvi and "Uyire Uyire" sung by Javed Ali, Madhushree are equally competitive melodies. What makes the latter score low is the singer selection. Javed ali has sung it neatly with only few errors while Madhushree...hmmm.

Swetha shines well in "Nenjukkulla" but the song is too short to make an impact. Another club number "Night is still young" is the only song that did not appeal to me. Not to mistake. Give it a listen. You may like it. :)

All songs in Muthirai have the stamp of Yuvan. A very much satisfying album. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

Music Review: Angai Theru - GV Prakash, Vijay Antony

The poetic title "Angadi Theru" says it all. A breezy album with lilting songs. Four of six songs are composed by GV Prakash while the rest two are composed by Vijay Antony.

My Pick of the album is "Aval Appadi Ondrum Azhagillai" by Vijay Antony. A breezy number with poetic lyrics by Na. Muthukumar. Song opens with a beautiful Keyboard and Flute music. That sets the tone for this soothing song. Singer Karthik at his best once again. "Enge Poveno" is a slow number by Vijay antony. That's a passable track as it has nothing fresh to offer.

Among GVP's composition, "Un Perai Sollum" is the pick. A swingy melody with excellent rendition by Naresh Iyer and Shreya Goshal. Na. Muthukumar excels in lyrics once again. A feel good song. "Kathaigalai Pesum" is another beautiful peppy melody with superb vocals of Benny and Hamzika. GVP's singing in "Kannil Theriyum" is truly great. He has sung it so well like a professional singer. The song is good but reminds me of ARR's composition. And the worst track of the album is "Karungali Naaye" with disgusting lyrics. I just ignored it.

Overall, Angadi Theru is a fantastic album. Both the composers have done a commendable job. Along with GVP and VA, it is poet Na. Muthukumar who deserves equal credits for penning beautiful lyrics.!

A Short take on World Movies

I happened to watch some international movies of various genres. Here is a short take on those movies. Believe me… Each one of them is worth watching.

Life is Beautiful, 1997, Documentry
Verdict for this movie lies in the name itself. Beautiful. One of the most beautiful movies that I have ever seen. Realistic narration. Amazing performance by the lead actors Roberto Benigni and Nicoletta Braschi. The climax was very moving. Don’t just watch it. Experience it. Some of the scenes from this movie has been cheaply copied and used in Vijay’s Youth. Remember the tag line of Youth? Life is Beautiful.

Dawn of the Dead, 2004 - Horror, Thriller
Tale of a group of people who are trapped in a shopping mall which is surrounded by a swarm of zombies. They sketch out a master plan to save their lives. What was it? Check that out. An excellent horror movie with scary scenes and sounds. I jumped out of my seat quite a few times during the first 20-30 minutes. Yes. True.

The Others, 2001, Supernatural horror, thriller
A supernatural horror movie with some frightening scenes. Superb BGM that scares us more. Worth Watching for its scary scenes, the unpredictable climax and for the outstanding performance of Nicole Kidman.

The Blair Witch Project, 1999, Horror, Thriller
Another horror movie. Tale of three student filmmakers who go into the woods to do a project of “The Blair Witch”. A horror movie that forgoes spooky characters and gory scenes. Managed to scare me to some extent. Personally I was disappointed. Worth watching.

The Silence of The Lambs, 1991, Thriller
Wow… What a movie. This is a Psychological thriller film. Superb performance by Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. Aah… The climax scene reminded me of the climax of Shankar’s Indian. Ditto.

Audition, 1999, Thriller
Japanese horror movie. There is no horror scene in the movie. Direcor had done almost a documentary in the first half. Aah… There comes the interesting 30 minutes which will f**k the viewers’ mind. Really. It freaks you out every time the girl says “ kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri" (Means, "deeper").

List of songs that I've been listening to!

Katrukulle (Sarvam), Nee Thane (Sarvam), Adada (Sarvam), Siragugal (Sarvam) - Sarvam is one helluva album from Yuvan.

Vamanan Songs: Oru Devadhai, Yaarai Ketpadhu and Yedho Seigirai. All three melodies are equally good. Yaarai Ketpadhu being my pick. Stunning melodies from Yuvan.

Anbale Azhagana Veedu and Oru Vetkam from Pasanga. Fantastic melodies with excellent vocals. James Vasanthan, you are not a one hit wonder!

Many songs from Pokkisham. Just cannot pick one as Favorite. A very good album from Sabesh-Murali.

Movie Review: Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum

Story:
Same old story. Spoiler ahead. Do not read if you are yet to watch the movie (Hero and Heroine love each other truly. Dreams go haywire. Situation forces heroine to get married to some X. X is a rowdy who spends more time jail than in house. Heroine comes back to the village where their love blossomed. Hero is still in love with her. A small misunderstanding prevails. Heroine thinks that hero did not even try to rescue her from her marriage. He actually tried but in vain. Climax is bit predictable but a not bad one though. aSubham)

Director makes an impression by introducing fresh faces who are not fair handsome, glamor, (just like VKK). He miserably failed in portrayal of the characters. Dubbing voices were not appropriate for the characters seen on the screen. No proper lip sync, tone, pause etc. First half was ok. second half was dragging... thank god.. climax was crisp. Rural feel was completely there

Director's inexperience was very clear in the screenplay. He has no prior experience in this field (as told by him in an interview). Lack of fresh ideas is a big minus. Could have made it much better. The twist just before the interval made me sit up. After this, only towards the climax I realized that I was yawning and leaning back. Welcome Rajmohan. You can definitely prove yourself if you concentrate more in the above said points. All the best for your future ventures!

Performances:
Both the lead pair (Ramakrishna and Dharshana) who stammer in acting at first, picked up later and have done justice to their roles. Ramakrishna has done a commendable job in second half while Dharshana stole the show with wide gamut of emotions and expressions.

Music and Cinematography:
Could feel the change in Music as it is Live Orchestra Recording. No synth sound has been used in this movie. Flute, violin sounds were good with Originality. Apart from this, Yuvan's Music was above average. 1st half had very little music and second half was good. One thing that bothered me in music is, the same kinda music was heard throughout the movie. Well, Yuvan needs to learn more when it comes to rural based subjects.

Cinematography by Siddharth was really cool. Sinnianchirusu song picturization was very good though it reminded me of Kangal Irandal, Aiyaiyo (Paruthiveera) at times. Oru Nimisham song was so apt for that situation. It was really haunting. Velmurugan who has sung this song must be appreciated.

Overall: Average movie. But don't go with huge expectations. You would be disappointed! Just like me!

Siva Manasula Sakthi – Definitely not an SMS

Happened to watch Siva Manasula Sakthi last week. The hype given by Ananda Vikatan and some of my friends made me watch this movie. Some of my friends rated this as a very good entertainer. Well, in my opinion, it was a mediocre movie.

Story:
Sakthi (Anuya), an RJ in a local FM station meets Siva (Jiiva) during a train journey. She lies through her teeth that she is an Airhostess. Siva, a courier man in Professional Courier, boasts about him that he is an Army Man. But, soon after few days, Siva goes to deliver a courier to “Sakthi” in Hello FM station where he comes to know that Sakthi is not an Airhostess. Sakthi too comes to know that he is a courier delivery boy. Ego Clash starts! Love blossoms. What else? Arguments, fights, ego clashes, separation happens with “Subam” at the end!

Performances:
Jiiva is one my favorite actors of this generation. He has done his part well. This role is a child’s play for his acting abilities. I could encounter some overreaction from Jiiva in couple of scenes while Anuya surprised me with a decent performance. Subtle reactions during the ego clashes were really good. Urvasi, as usual delivered both good and over action. Performance of the girl who plays Jiiva’s sister was intolerable. Who is that girl? New face?

Pros and Cons:

Many said that Santhanam-Jiiva combo rocked in comedy. But to me, the comedy was pretty average in the first half except few dialogues and timings by Santhanam. The dragging second half was another minus point.

Debutant director Rajesh shines well in few scenes which were quite enjoyable. For instance, Sakthi’s disappointment in the scene where she wishes Siva on his birthday (false date given by Jiiva) and utters some schmaltzy dialogues. The next scene, in bus, where Siva feels sorry for whatever happened the last night. After Siva finishes his speech, Sakthi wears out the headsets from ears to show that she did not listen to any of his words! Rerecording in this scene was really good.

Lengthier, unentertaining second half with an absurd scene in the climax is certainly a minus point. There is no strong reason why Siva asks Sakthi to sleep with her before marriage. Movie lacks, a crisp and entertaining screenplay, interesting twists and turns. Can watch it for the lead pair Jiiva and Anuya!
Cinematography was good and Yuvan’s background score was mediocre. Oru Kal and Parvaiyil songs were good.

Verdict: Siva Manasula Sakthi – Definitely not as short as SMS.

Music Review: Vamanan by Yuvan Shankar Raja

Another superb album from Yuvan. A must listen.

Orchestration is truly good in Edho Seigirai. It is male singer's rendition which spoils this beautiful melody. Yes, it is the same Javed Ali who killed the beautiful song "siragugal" in Sarvam. Female singer Sowmya sounds too good in this song. Roopkumar is better than Javed Ali in "Oru Devadhai", a beautiful ghazal type melody. Use of Solo violin in pre, inter and postludes is catchy. Singer's voice is good but pronunciation really sucks. Nevertheless, this is one heck of song.

"Enge Povadhu" is another melody orchestrated with minimal music. Soulful singing of Vijay Yesudoss elevates this song. A slow number that grows in you after few listens.

Club number "Lucky Star" sounds better than the fast paced "Money Money". Lucky star sung by Blaze may go well with the masses.

It's high time that Yuvan realizes how important singer selection is to make an album successful. What in Roopkumar makes him feel better that our Hariharan. Why can't he prefer our talented singer Karthik to Javed Ali???

Overall, Vamanan is on par with Sarvam. Of course, Sarvam is his best in recent times!

I'm a regular reader of The Hindu. Only because I got the free subscription for a year, I subscribed for Times Of India and have been reading it regularly. I came across one article about Health and Nutrition in TOI, Chennai dated 7th April. It seriously pissed me off.

Sometimes, the pictures they use to represent the objective of the articles are artrocious, irrelevant, idiotic. Sexy, glamarous picture for an article about "Understanding Women". Another sexy pic for "Healthy Nutrition". What the f**k.

Below is the link for those two articles which put me off completely.

Times Of India publishers - How the hell do you think it is relevant to this article? It's utter nonsense. Stop using such irrelevant, idiotic pictures for articles.

When the hell these idiots will stop depecting Women as a sex object in advertising? This applies to all dailies, weeklies, monthlies.

Music Review: Pasanga - James Vasanthan

Our "Kangal Irandal" James Vasanthan is back with his second album "Pasanga". This album is a solid proof that his success in Subramaniapuram music wasn't a fluke. His work in "Pasanga" is genuine.

"Pasanga" has four tracks in total which includes an bit song. So only three full tracks!

The first track that impressed me is "Oru Vetkam Varudhe" sung by Naresh Iyer and Shreya Ghosal. A beautiful melody with breezy lyrics. Not just the beautiful Violin and flute interludes that make this song astounding, the vocal combination of Naresh and Shreya as well. James has struck the right chord in choosing singers for this melody. Next "Kangal Irandal" is ready to rock the small screens.

Composer's idea of choosing Legend Balamurali Krishna sir for the beautiful "Anbaale Azhagagum Veedu" works like a charm. This song features lovely chorus of kids. Use of solo violin in the second interlude is awesome. I couldn't help but excited when I listened to this song. This song is comparable to A R Rahman's "Nee thaan en Desiya Geetham".

Orchestration part in fast paced "Nandhan Goppanda" is good. Sadly this song failed to impress me even after two, three listening. Composer's attempt in Rock genre for the song "Who's that guy" is quite good.

Verdict:
James has managed to churn out a pretty decent album with some fresh music. Laudable efforts indeed. Good job!!

From my heart: Why isn't there a good kids song (like what we got in Anjali) when the movie's theme is about children's lives? That's a minus point.

REC - A real horror flick

I have no great passion for Horror Movies neither do I have a great aversion for such movies. I’ve seen hardly three or four horror movies (including Yavarum Nalam. Lol) of which “Grudge” impressed me. Last week I heard about a horror movie called “REC” (2007). Decided to watch it and watched it yesterday. Running time is 75 mins.

Believe me, this is THE BEST horror movie that I’ve seen. This movie managed to ruin my sleep last night. Horror scenes kept disturbing me throughout the night. Go watch it.

Filmed using "Shaky Camerawork" is a big plus. You don't get the feel of watching a movie rather you get the feel of watching some horror scenes recorded live.

If you love horror movies, this one is sure a feast. Check it out!

Warning: Please do not watch this move with weak hearted people, children or ladies.

Yavarum Nalam Movie Review

First of all I wish to start this post by saying that it was so great to see Maddy aka Madhavan on big screen after a long time. If at all there is one actor whom I love the most next to Rajni and Kamal, it's Maddy. Yavarum Nalam is definitely a good re-entry for him. He has done his part so well (as usual).

Well, disclosing the story here may be a spoiler. So lemme share my thoughts, what I enjoyed, what I disliked, plusses and minuses of the movie. Yavarum Nalam (13B in Hindi) is a horror movie. In Tamil Film Industry, there is no dearth for Love stories or action scripts or thriller stories or comedy stories. But "Horror" genre has always been rare to see in TFI. So the expectations are high!

What do you think could be the story of a horror movie?
Hero and his family move into a new apartment. Strange things happening in the flat. He starts discovering the mystery and saves his family. Correct? Yavarum Nalam is not an exception in this. It does have the similar plot.

What makes it different?
Things that make this movie different are,

** There is no priest who tells the history of the place (flat).
** No pooja (Homam) is performed to please the ghost and save the family.
** No strange characters to scare the audience... LOL...
** Usually ghost scares the hero and his family in the form of a person or in the form of a voice. But in YN, director Vikram K Kumar has adopted a new technique in this. That's laudable. The ghost in this movie comes through a different medium. That is strikingly different even though we get a question in mind (Can this happen?). However, that is something new that we get to see.
** A perfect blend of humor and horror.
** P.C Shriram's cinematography. Stunning. Forgoing the regular bluish tone, the film's cinematography carries a different tone which is great to see on the screen. The way our Cinematographer shows the lift is awesome. Of course, when there is PC Shriram, we need not worry about the cinematography part.

Performances:
Saranya Ponvannan, as a home maker who is passionate about tele serials, fits the bill. Neetu as maddy's wife. Even though the role doesn't offer much scope, she has done her part well. Maddy's friend, who is a police man, has done justice to his role. The whole theatre LOLed when he asks maddy for updates on the TV Serial. ROTFL. Good job.

Pros:

** Maddy..... Maddy..... Maddy..... Maddy..... Maddy..... Maddy..... He perfectly suits the role of Upper Middle Class man. With subtle expressions on his face in romancing his wife, getting scared when he experiences strange things, in comedy sequences, worrying for his family members, maddy enthralls the audience. That was a treat to watch him.
** Cinematography and editing.
** Screenplay in first half and interesting twits and turns in second half.

Cons:

** Feckless background score. Tubby-Parik has done the BGM. BGM could have been better for this horror movie.
** Second half could have been abridged.
** Loopholes...some are really silly!

Verdict:

Go, watch the movie. You will surely like it. With horror genre movies becoming rare in TFI, this one should not be missed. Don't miss it. Movie is worth watching.

Well, it's been months since I wrote song reviews. Here is one for you :) :)

Is this a soothing melody? - No
Has this song got beautiful lyrics? - Hmmm. Not really.
Is this song a good duet? - Never.
Has it got good vocals? - Yes.
Has this song got a good orchestration? - Yes. Pretty good.
Is orchestration the only reason I love this song? - Not exactly.
Then what makes me write a review for this song??????? :x

The way the composer fuses an old melody song in this fast paced number. That is not an easy task at all!!! The fast paced number "Sutta Suriyanai" song in Sarvam is the one I'm talking about. Yuvan amazingly fuses "Megam Karukkudhu Mazhai vara paakudhu" song at 2.25 when the song is going on a fast paced note. Well done. This is one main reason I love this song despite its run-of-the-mill tune. Listen to it. You will like it....

Awards or Insults?

A funny thing that has happened recently in Tamil Nadu is the announcement of “Kalai Mamani” awards for cine artists for their contribution (????) to Tamil Cinema. A decade ago, Kalai Mamani award was observed as one of the most prestigious awards. But now this has turned out to be an insult to some recipients and to the award itself. The award has lost its respect.

Insulting the Award:

Couple of years ago when I read “Kalai Mamani” awards for Surya, Jyothika and few other artists, I couldn’t stop laughing and I pitied the award.

Then last year it was irritating to see Trisha’s name in the award list. (For beach dance?)

This nonsense has gone one step further this year. I feel that it is an insult to “Kalai Mamani Award” that they have included Simbu, Asin, Nayanthara, Vaiyapuri and most interestingly Kanja Karuppu, Jayam Ravi etc in the list.

What have Asin, Nayantara and Kanja Karuppu achieved in Tamil Cinema? Most of them have not even completed 5 years in Filmdom. How the hell are they eligible for this prestigious (?) award? Most of them do not know to speak Tamil properly. Nonsense!!!!

Insulting the recipients:

And the most insulting part is the yesteryear actor, our very own PadmaShri, PadmaBushan “Saroja Devi” has been included in the list along with these kiddos. Lol. I feel it as an insult to Saroja Devi.

Does it take 54 years to accept Saroja Devi as an actor and her contribution to Tamil Films? She has already been felicitated with PadmaShri (1969) four decades ago and Padma Bhushan (1992) one and a half decade ago. Now, this is certainly an insult to her. I don’t know how she feels. But as a fan, I feel that she has been insulted.

The nail biting moments in Oscars have ended up very positively..... I was one of the millions of people who were watching Oscar moments live....

India's Oscar Dream has come true!!!

ARR has won two Oscar Awards for both Original Score and Best Song category.... It's not a delight... It is Double Delight!!! Rasool Pookutty has also won Oscar for India!!! It was very thrilling to see ARR on Oscar Stage!! Phenomenal.... Great.... Achivement.... We are proud!!! At last, the question mark here has been replaced by an Oscar!!! Kudos!!!

It was moving to see an Indian on Oscar Stage. It was emotional. It was a magical moment. The moment is one of the best moments for India. It was a great to see ARR with thunderous applause.

Love you Rahman!!! Thank you so much for bringing home The Oscars!!!

Congratulations!!!!!

You are the Indian of this Year!!!!

And the most beautiful moment is that Rahman said few words in Tamil on the Stage. I think this is the first time our very own Tamil reaches Oscar Stage. A R Rahman said,

"எல்லாப் புகழும் இறைவனுக்கே"

This is the dream of every Indian, every Tamilian. This has been fulfilled by our AR Rahman.

Music Review - Sarvam by Yuvan Shankar Raja

Vishnuvardhan-Yuvan combo has done it once again. Sarvam has come out really well with brilliantly orchestrated fast-paced numbers and melodies. Yuvan's innovation, stylish composition comes to fore once again.

The flute music that comes in regular intervals in "Adada vaa" song is catchy. Yuvan always gives a haunting melody to his Dad. But surprisingly this time, it's IR who has sung this hip-hop kinda song. Works really well Don't miss the flute music!

Yuvan's trademark melody is "Siragugal" sung by Javed Ali and Madhu Sree. If you are ready to compromise on Vocals front, this would surely be a good melody for you. ~~Yes, both male and female voice are pathetic~~. Pronunciation of the singers sucks. Unbearable. Javed Ali who did a good job in "Chinna sirisu" in KPKP, miserably fails this time. Madhusree, as usual!

However, the best track in the album is "Katrukulle Vasam". A thumping melody with enough innovation in orchestration. Fabulous lyrics by Pa. Vijay. Read the second line in the previous paragraph once again and listen to the melody. A precious melody has been mercilessly killed by composer's vocals.

With grand orchestration and good vocals, "Suttal Suriyanai" is another good number. The way Yuvan uses "Megam Karukkudhu Mazhai vara paakkuddhu" lines is simply beautiful. Great song! I guess, Shankar Mahadevan's voice could be an apt choice for this song.

"Neethane" is another good melody which is again spoiled by Yuvan's vocals. Pa. Vijay's lyrics are beautiful. Give it a listen. You may like it.

Aah... There is a Theme Music. Yuvan never falters when it comes to Theme Music. But this time he does. The theme Music doesn't really stand out rather it reminds you of Billa theme at times. It reminds me of Aanandha Thandavam theme music, in the sense that it starts of well but ends abruptly.

Verdict: Overall, Sarvam is yet another stylish album from Yuvan. Had Yuvan avoided rendering his voice and concentrated more on singer selection, this album would have been the best album in recent times. Album is worth buying. But remember, you have to compromise of vocals!

Trivia: It is said that, some parts of music in "Adada vaa" song has been lifted from an international album. Will check this out and update it!

Another Diamond in ARR's Crown

It's known that he has already bagged LAFCA (Los Angles Film Critics Awards) and Golden Globe Award for best Original Score for the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Now, our hero is on his way to bag Oscar Award for Best Original Score. Let's put across our sincere prayers!

Now, that GG on the right and BAFTA on the left of his crown, will Oscar come in the center??? Countdown Starts!!!!

Naan Kadavul - Movie Review

Discussing the story of Naan Kadavul may become a spoiler. Hence I've decided not to reveal the story here. I'm sharing my opinion on this movie.

First 20 mins was excellent. But movie miserably fails to move on with a good screenplay. There were good scenes too in the first half. Overall the first half was little boring to me. First 5-10 mins in the second of made me regret for the money i spent to watch this movie. No. I was wrong. There comes the turning point, soon after the second half starts. The next 40-50 mins of the movie including the climax is stunning and never seen in Tamil Cinema (or even in Indian Cinema). Bala, as usual excells in characterization. Wonderful attempt Bala :thumbsup:

With scary looks and husky voice Arya has done his best. Except for few mantras and some hindi dialogues, he has nothing to speak/act in the movie. However, he makes his presence felt. Good job man!

Pooja steals the show with her extraordinary performance. Kudos to bala for getting the best out of her. Award nichayam.

Bala’s touch in movies like Pithamagan is not seen much in this movie. But then, there are few scenes which are never seen in cinema. Bala has captured the feel/emotion/lives of those “kai vida pattavargal” (orphans) very beautifully! Words fail to express the impact that it creates in one’s hearts. There are some questions that are asked against god in this movie. Questions may sound valid for atheists.

Music and Camera:
Raja proves that he is god once again in this movie. :clap: :bow: :fall_at_his_feet: His music in second half is terrific. Right from the intro of Arya , where the camera travels from top angle till the climax, the cinematography is outstanding. :clap:

Negative points:
* Why does Bala need 2+ years to make this movie? (108 heroines change pannina aagathaan seiyum :P )
* Playing old songs where few characters imitate MGR, Sivaji, Rajni etc :banghead: Does this kinda sensitive movie require such elements??? :argh: It was boring to see :fatigue:
* Arya comes hardly for 30-45 mins. Bala could have given more importance to Arya's role.
* Only two out of six songs have been included. Injustice to Raaja's composition.

Verdict: A very different cinema that captures the world of “abandoned” which we’ve never seen in tamil cinema. It also brings the business of cunning people behind those orphans to limelight. Barring those few boring scenes, movie is definitely worth watching! Second half elevates the movie. Naan Kadavul - boring at times, stunning at times, funny at times, disturbing at times, scary at times. Overall - worth watching many times.

PS: I strongly recommend you not to watch it with kids or weak hearts.

* Kannil Paarvai (Shreya Ghosal), Om Siva hum (Vijay Prakash) and Pichai Pathiram (Madhu Balakrishnan) from Naan Kadavul. Almost all the songs from Naan Kadavul are in my playlist with these three being played very often.

* Mella Oorndhu (Ilayaraja) and Onnukkonnu Thunai (KJ Yesudoss) from Nandhalala. Both the numbers are equally soothing. Hmmm... as soothing as a lullaby.

* Vizhi Moodi Yosithal (Karthik) from Ayan. A thumping melody from Harris Jeyaraj.

* Chinnan Sirisu (Javed Ali), Kadaloram (SPB Charan) and Oru Nimisham (Velmurugan) from Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum. Yuvan in fine form. A special mention to the haunting lyrics and outstanding vocals in Oru Nimisham.

* Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (Yuvan) and Oru Paarvayil (Ranjith) from Siva Manasula Sakthi (SMS). Rich orchestration in both the songs.

* Masakkali Masakkali from Delhi-6 by AR Rehman. I've only a little exposure to Hindi songs. I love this song. Music arrangement in this song is very innovative. First time I'm listening to such a stunning orchestration. This songs gives a different feel. Words fail me. Thumbs Up Oscar Nayagan AR Rahman.

* Mudhal Murai (Harini, Hariharan, Tippu) from Adhe Neram Adhe Idam. A good melody by Premji.

Siva Manasula Sakthi (SMS) Music Review

Jeeva-Yuvan, the combo which has delivered two mind-blowing albums Raam and Katradhu Thamizh is back with Siva Manasula Sakthi a.k.a SMS.

The fast paced, peppy number "MGR Illeenga" is instantly likable with catchy lyrics even though there is no fresh idea in orchestration. A passable track. "Oru Adangapidari" sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Swetha fails to impress despite the catchy flute interludes. Third song, "Eppadio Maatikitten" sung by Clinton and Nruthya has very good orchestration and nice interludes. But the tune is really boring and so are the lyrics.

Aah... Two songs of the first three songs are average. Doesn't that set the tone for the rest of the album? Let us see...

Fourth song is the highlight of the album. "Oru Kal, Oru Kannadi" sung by Yuvan himself. A hio-hop melody. Lovely lyrics by Na. Muthukumar, impeccable arrangement of music, excellent interludes join hands with not-bad vocals of Yuvan Shankar Raja. And the result? A beautiful melody is ready. Best song of the album.

"Thithikkum Theeye" sung by KK and Swetha is another passable track. The orchestration certainly reminds you of "Endha Kudhirayil" song of Satham Podathe. Not only the orchestration, even the small musical phrase sung by Swetha that comes in between the song, matches with "Praana Naadha" lines of Satham Podathe song.

The second version of "Oru Kal, Oru Kannadi" is a complete disaster coz of Adnan Samy's vocals.

Wow... Beautiful Keyboard and Violin combination makes the short melody "Oru Paarvayil" delightful. I wish this could have been a full song.

Yuvan's orchestrating ability sparkles in four songs. But what is the use when the main melody/tune is not appealing? Yuvan miserably fails here.

To write the verdict in SMS format,
An avg album frm d gr8 combo, Yvn-Jva. SMS s nt as gd as Raam/KT. Btr luck nx time. Tc.

Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum - Music Review

Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum is the second challenging album (after Paruthiveeran) for Yuvan Shankar Raja to showcase his ability in composing tunes that give a complete rural feel.

"Kadaloram" with SP Charan's vocals and "Chinna Sirisu" with Javed Ali and Bela Shinde vocals are simply soothing melodies with beautiful lyrics and matured orchestration. The orchestration in the former does remind you of Paruthiveraan music at times. However, tune is genuine and the vocals very clearly reflect the character of the songs. Good choice of singers.

"Oru Nimisham", an oppaari song sung by Velmurugan is a disturbing number. A special mention to the lyrics that convey the pain of the male being left alone by his girl.

The second version of "Kadaloram" with Yuvan's vocals is a number to be avoided mainly for the irritating vocals.

In the Kuthu (or Koothu song) song "Muthathu Pakkathil", Yuvan uses his father's "Nandhavanathil oru Rajakumari" tune. The last song "Nan Dharmanda" is a noisy kuthu song that fails to impress despite SPB's energetic vocals. The tune, orchestration, instrument arrangement are something which we have heard so-so-so many times.

Well, to conclude, KPKP is no Paruthiveeran, but a good album overall. A decent attempt that gives the rural feel but, only partly.

Slumdog Millionaire has won 10 nominations in total.
There is only one competitor for "Best Original Song" category. A track from Wall E has been nominated with these two songs of Rahman. That indirectly assures that we've won the Award.

Ayan - Music Review

Harris Jeyaraj is in decent from in Ayan.

"Nenje Nenje" sung by Harish Ragavendra and Mahati is a beautiful duet. The interludes are good, the second interlude in particular. "Vizhi Moodi" sung by talented singer Karthik turns out to be the best song of the album. An appealing melody with mind-blowing orchestration. Harris has tried something different in this song, especially in the second interlude. Well done!!!!

Fast paced "Pala Pala" fails to impress at the start, but as the song progresses to the Charam part, it really starts cathing your attention. Harris-Hariharan combo once again succeeds. The other two songs "Aayiye ayiye" sung by Benny, Chinmayi and "Honey Honey" sung by Sayarora are pretty ordinary tracks.

Verdict:
With three good songs Harris does it once again. Composer once again strikes the right chord in choosing the singers. A decent album overall.

Indira Vizha (Yathish) - Music Review

Has five tracks in total. The song "Mogama Motchama" sung by Hariharan and Sujatha is simply enthralling despite the little familiar tune. However the song is worth listening! Orchestration is too noisy that masks the lyrics. "Sexy Sanyasi" and "Kashmir Konduva" are noisy tracks. Another shameful attemt on remix. The remix track "Oru Kinnathai Yendhugindren" is simply irritating. Shankar Mahadevan's is the only saving grace in the noisy kuthu song "Bumper Vacha".

Adhe Neram Adhe Idam (Premji Amaran) - Music Review

"Mudhal Murai" is a pleasant surprise from Premji. An excellent melody with pretty decent orchestration. "Vennilavu" is a passable melody. The other tracks that include"Adhu oru Kaalam", "Namma ooru chennai" and "Toshiba" are below average songs.

Nandhalala - Music Review (Detailed)

Yes. IR has created the magic once again.

With, Mella Oorndhu, Ilayaraja proves that he is still a versatile singer. Age no bar. His melting voice perfectly suits the mood of the song. Starting with a beautiful prelude, the song dwells in our ear so soothingly. Lyrics by Na. Muthukumar deserve a special mention.

Magical voice of KJ Yesudoss sir is addictive in "Onnukkonnu Thunai Irukku". A song with mindblowing orchestration and mind-expanding lyrics by Mu. Mehta. Raaja's decision of choosing KJY for this song works out really well.

A typical sad song of Raaja packed with nice interludes is "Thaalattu ketka", sung by raaja himself. Hmmmm... This song is not as good as the previous two. This song reminds me of some of his works of 80s. Even though there are no complaints against Ilayaraja's singing, I feel that he could have chosen a different singer for this song. Anyways that's just my personal opinion.

"Kai Veesi" starts with an interesting prelude and flows very pleasantly with dazzling vocals of Vijay Yesodoss and Swetha.

Ilayaraja together with his grandson Yatheeswaran rock in "Oru Vaandu Kootame". Ilayaraja's way of singing in 2nd Charanam doesn't sound so good :( . Overall the song is superb with interesting interludes.

The last track "Elilea... Elilea..." by Saroja Ammaal (NariKuruvar/Gypsy). The only thing I can mention here is, this is the first time we get to hear such a different track in Tamil Music. A good try indeed. Nothing else to write about this track.

Verdict:
As the name implies, "Nandhala" is a sweet lullaby to our ears. It's sad to hear that two tracks "Kai Veesi" and "Oru Vaandu Kootame" have been excluded in the movie. Both are good numbers, especially the former. Mysskin disappoints Ilayaraja fans.

Nandhalala album is one reason, why we are still crazy about Ilayaraja's music! At last, Nandhalala music has come to replace Nan Kadavul songs from my playlist.

1. Mella oorndhu oorndhu - Ilaiyaraaja - Na.Muthukumar - Breezy melody with beautiful lyrics.

2. Onnukkonu - KJ Yesudas - Mu.Mehta - KJY's recent best. Soul stirring melody again with excellent lyrics.

3. Thalaattu kEtka nAnum - Ilaiyaraaja - Muthulingam - Another slow song. Mesmerizing orchestration!

4. kai veesi - Vijay Yesudas, Suwetha, Mathu Balakrishnan, Rahul, Chandrasekar - Pazhani Bharathy - Can't comment on this now.

5. oru vAndu koottamE - Ilaiyaraaja, Master Yaththeeswaran - Kabilan - Needs repeated listen. I'm not ok with Raaja's voice in this songs :? :roll: :oops:

6. eililEa eililEa (Gypsy song) - Saroja Ammal - First time in Tamil Cinema, we get to hear NariKuruvar song. Hats off!!!

Tamil Film Music 2009 - A detailed preview!

Said bye to 2008 which was not a great year for Tamil Music. But 2007 was a great year for Tamil Music, IMO.

Having passed a boring year, what can we expect in 2009?

2009 will definitely be a good year for music lovers. How?

Maestro Ilayaraja has started this year with an extraordinary album "Nan Kadavul". This will be one of the best albums of the year 2009 and will be ranked somewhere in the top.

Here is a list of albums which would be released in 2009. These albums would definitely be a treat for musical lovers, I believe.

Starting with Maestro, IR will have his Nandhala releasing next month. The expectations for this album were already high. But it has now gone sky high after Nan Kadavul release. Then comes, his "Kadhal Arangam", a movie with a different script (as said by the director) which sheds lights on libidinal thoughts of youngsters. IR's score will definitely be extraordinary for such an offbeat theme. Then you have Valmiki, Mayilu in IR's list.

AR Rahman will have his Chennaiyil Oru Mazhai Kalam, Endhiran (tentative), Maanavar Dhinam, Maniratnam's Asokavanam and ~~KS Ravikumar's Aadhavan starring Surya~~. After a long gap, we will have minimum 3 Tamil albums of ARR this year.

Maestro's son Yuvan Shankar Raja will be the Music Director of this year I guess. With more than a dozen of movies in his packet, he''ll be on the roll this year. Some of his albums include rustic Yogi and Kunguma Poovum Konju Puravum, peppy tunes in Sarvam and Muthirai, scintillating melodies in Siva Manasula Sakthi and Kadhal 2 Kalyanam. Loveable songs minimum guaranteed for Yuvan fans. His few other projects include Paiya, Maa, 16, Goa, Aarnya Kaandam etc. As a Yuvan fan, I'm very much eagerly awaiting the release of at least 10 albums this year.

Harris Jeyaraj's Ayan is awaiting the release. Looking forward to "Asal" where he teams up with Ajit for the first time. Once again he teams up with actor Surya for "Aadhavan" directed by KS Ravikumar.

The music director who'll steal the show should be GVP whose last release was stunning Anandha Thandavam. GV Prakash will have good albums releasing this year. The one I'm eagerly waiting is "Aairathil Oruvan". The other one is "Angadi Theru" in which we may see Veyil GVP. Any other movies he has got this year? Let me know!

I have no idea about the albums of VidyaSagar. His 1977 has been released while his Peranmai with Jananathan is in pipeline.

Dharan's Poda Podi and James Vasanthan's Naanayam are also in the list of promising albums.

To conclude, 2009 is definitely a great year for Tamil Music.

Naan Kadavul Music Review Ver 2.0

For Nan Kadavul Movie Review

Last week, I wrote my review after I listened to the songs! But this time, I'm writing after I experienced the music of Nan Kadavul!

Saturday night, I had to go on for a journey of 600 Kms in Car. Night Journey! Whenever I go on for such journeys, I load at least 150 songs in my mobile to make my journey pleasant and untiring! This time too! I prepared a play list of 150+ songs (incl. 3 songs from Nan Kadavul) and started my journey! But, strangely, I had no interest in listening to those songs. There wasn’t a perfect mood! I couldn’t enjoy the songs!

So, I switched to Nan Kadavul playlist where I had only three songs from Nan Kadavul (Kannil Parvai, Amma un kovil and Siva Om) and put it in loop!!! Believe me, I never went back to the other playlist! Listened only to these three songs for over 30 times! Ilayaraja made my journey pleasant! BOW!!! Here is the detailed review of those three songs.

Kannil Paarvai – Shreya Ghosal

A beautiful melody with mind-blowing orchestration. Wow!!! Amazing lyrics tell us the emotions of a blind girl. Shreya’s voice is good for this song but certainly not the best. She could have sung this with ease. I feel a strain in her voice which spoils her diction at times! However, her voice is mesmerizing in this song!

யார்க்கும் போல் ஒரு அன்னை, தந்தை, எனக்கும் இருந்தது உண்டு.

யார்க்கும் போல் ஒரு தேகம், தாகம், எனக்கும் வளர்ந்தது இங்கு.

Om Siva Om – Vijay Prakash

The song that creates a vibration, especially the rudhra mantras that come in between! Udukkai, Mrithangam sounds pierce the heart of the listener. Vijay’s rendition is unparalleled especially when he says “Aham Brahmasmi Om Om”. Every bit of orchestration and the interludes are powerful. In particular, the music from 3:30 to 4:20. It does create a vibration when listening! Hats off to Ilayaraja!

Amma un Pillai – Sadhana Sargam

First thing that comes to my mind is Sadhana’s rendition. A good song (even though old) spoilt by her voice. When Chithra, Sujatha, Chimayi are around, why did Ilayaraja choose Sadhana?? Huh! Definitely a mistake!

Sadhana’s diction of words like “PeNN”, “KaNN” are pathetic! She even says “Pillzhai” instead of “PiLLai”!!

Then comes the weak orchestration that spoils the mood of the song. The song starts off so well but fails miserably in the first interlude. As the song progresses to first interlude, the flow of the song is disrupted by the western-like beats. The divine feel, mood of the song is completely spoiled. Valee at his best once again! Mind-expanding lyrics indeed!

Pichai Pathiram – Madhu Balakrishnan

A complete song. No complaints. Madhu Balakrishnan’s career best! What a voice.

I’m being carried away by emotions. I’m still listening..sorry.. experiencing the songs... I think only his Nandhalala can get me out of Nan Kadavul songs!

Kudos to Ilayaraja! A special thanks to Bala for making this kind of movies.

Naan Kadavul Music Review

With Naan Kadavul, Ilayaraja takes us through a journey of devotional music!!! The divinity in Nan Kadavul songs pierce the hearts of the listeners!

Om Siva Om, sung by Vijay Prakash, is a kinda devotional song with Mantras on Lord Shiva. The overall orchestration is mindblowing! And, yes, one gets the feel of going through spiritual tour! Only IR can create this magic!

Shreya Ghosal's sweet voice aptly suits the mesmerizing melody "Kannil Paarvai". Starting with a solo violin prelude that conveys a lot of emotion, the song is so soothing to ears.

Equally good is Ilayaraja's "Oru Kaatril" (another version of "Kannil Parvai" with different lyrics)!

Sadhana Sargam's vocal adds more charm to "Amma Un Kovil" song. A neat melody!

Madhumitha's "Madha un Kovil" is good, but is too short to make any impact!

"Pichai Paathiram", the song that was composed for Ilayaraja's devotional album "Raman Malai" has been reused. This time song sung by Madhu Balakrishnan. One gets the feel of listeneing to the devotional song of KJ Yesudoss, when listening to this song. Madhu's voice sounds very similar to KJ Yesudoss's voice in this particular song! Laudable!

Overall, the albums gives us a feel of touring to some spiritual places!!! Ilayaraja all the way!!! Kudos!!!

This one of the albums that rarely we get from TFM. Well, Ilayaraja has begun this year with a great album. Hope this year turns of to be a great year for him and for other music directors as well!!! Eagerly waiting for Nandhalala album!!!

Music Director of the Year!

Undoubtedly Harris Jeyaraj is the music director of the year. Harris who failed to impress us with his average album Dham Dhoom and below average album Satyam, at last, deliverd Varanam Aayiram which was the outstanding and the best album of the year.

A.R.Rahman wins "2008 L.A Film Critics Award"

A.R.Rahman is a phenomenal in Indian Music. Every year, he wins some awards or recognitions and makes his fans happy. But this year, for a change, his achievement brings us a great joy and pride. This news makes not only his fans happy but also every Indian. This news not only makes you happy, but also makes you feel proud.

Our legend has won an International Award by working for the movie "Slumdog Millionaire". Yes, this Legend has won "2008 L.A Film Critics Award" for best musical score for the movie "Slumdog Millionaire". He has made the whole nation proud.

This news has made me very happy. I'm elated. I'm proud. I can proudly say to my e-pals (of various countries) that our music director has won an international award.

Congratulations to A.R.Rahman for this acheivement and hearty thanks to him for making us proud.

It's widely said that "any actor who gets a nod from the LA critics is sure to win a nomination from the Academy". I wish this comes true. I wish him all the best. Hope he brings home an Oscar!

My Current Playlist - Dec08

These are the songs which are in my current playlist. And, these are the few songs which impressed me in last two-three months. Yes, very less numbers.

* All songs from Varanam Aayiram (Harris Jeyaraj) except Yethi Yethi. Best album of the year. Hats off to Harris.

* Machan Machan from Silambattam (Yuvan Shankar Raja). Matured orchestration. Ilayaraja's rendition is another plus.

* Uyiril Yedho from Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu (Selva Ganesh) - A soothing melody with nice keyboard touch in the background. One of the top melodies of the year.

* Avarmpoo and Chu chu maari from Poo (SS Kumaran) - Both are gem numbers.

* Megam Pola from Aanandha Thandavam (GV Prakash) - One of the best of Shankar Mahadevan. Second interlude being the highlight of the song.

Well, we are at the end of the year. I'm preparing the list of best songs of the year 2008. Watch out this space. :)

Long Time No Update!!!

Well, this November has really been a dry month. Except Varanam Ayiram movie, there has been no big movie or audio release that has taken place this month. Few albums that released this month such as Mahesh Saranya Matrum Palar which has music by Vidyasagar, Sindhanai Sei by debutant Thaman and few other albums released in November have not been so good. In fact, boring! I’m yet to watch Poo which has been receiving positive reviews.

Answer to the last week puzzle

Here is the answer for this post where I had asked visitors to guess the song by giving the interludes.

Those beautiful interludes come in the song "Mullai Poo Soodi Kondu" from Kadhal Samrajyam which had music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. This male solo song is simple and delightful.

Kadhal Samrajiyam had beautiful music by Yuvan but sadly went unnoticed. Another song "Iru Kangal Sollum Kadhal Seidhen" is the best in this album. A fantastic duet.

Varanamayiram - Movie Review

The wait ends. One of the much awaited movies of the year is out.

Varanamayiram (VA) portrays the life journey of a man. As many of us know, the movie has been inspired from Forrest Gump. Inspiration is very minimal. VA is the blend of Forest Gump and the autobiography of the director.

The film starts with the demise of the aged Krishnan (Surya). The news is informed to his son Surya (Surya again as an Army officer) who is on a mission to rescue a writer who has been kidnapped by terrorists. Surya then starts recollecting the memories of his father and his life journey. The journey begins.

The movie shifts to 60s (or 80s) where Krishnan falls in love with his college mate Malini (Simran). She reciprocates his love and they get married. They are blessed with the gift of the married life. Surya is born. He grows up, he becomes a guitarist, and he studies in a college at Trichy. He meets Meghna (Sameera) in the train when he returns home after the completion of college life. He falls in love with her. He proposes her in the train itself. But Meghna who doesn’t believe in Love At First Sight rejects his proposal saying that Love cannot blossom just like that. Surya who is in sincere love with her tells her that he’ll not leave her and will only marry her. He later searches and finds her house and makes a proposal again. Meghna, who is surprised to see him at her house, says that she cannot fall in love as she is leaving US to pursue higher studies.

Krishnan falls sick and is hospitalized. Surya asks him to take rest and assures that he’ll take care of the family and finance. Surya obtains some projects to improve the financial status and builds a house for his dad. He is still in love with Meghna. He conveys this to his parents and gets their consent to leave for US to search Meghna. He finds Meghna. She is impressed and finally reciprocates her love. Then comes the tragedy. Meghna dies in a terrorist bomb attack in US.

Depressed Surya decides to come back to India. He meets a gentleman called Shankar Menon who lends his shoulder and tries to console Surya. Surya who is still not recovered from the loss of Meghna starts consuming drugs and becomes a drug addict.

Krishnan and Malini decide to send him out of the town on an attempt to rejuvenate Surya. Surya then tours Kashmir where he comes across the news that the son of Shankar Menon (person whom he met in airport) has been kidnapped. Surya decides to rescue his son and succeeds in his attempt.

Surya is back to home now. Priya (Divya) a friend of Surya’s sister is in love with Surya for years. But then she hid it as Surya was in love with Meghna. Now, she decides to make the proposal. Surya doesn’t accept her proposal.

Surya plans to join Indian Army. After he gets the nod from his parents, he joins Indian Army and becomes a Major. After few years, Priya comes to Indian Army to meet Surya and she makes the proposal again. He accepts and soon they get married.

One day, Krishnan falls sick and is diagnosed as Throat Cancer. He then undergoes an operation. Before he could recover fully, Surya gets a call from the army to rescue the writer who has been kidnapped. So he starts immediately to Kashmir. He is on the mission. Then is when he received the call from his home which conveyed the death of his father.

Surya returns home and completes his father’s funeral. The movie ends!

What I liked in VA?

Surya’s unparalleled performance as father and son is a nothing short of a treat. The emotions he shows when Meghna dies, when he behaves impolitely as a drug addict, his body language as an Army officer. This movie should be a milestone in his career. He does well in father’s role also. But then there is a scope for improvement.

Simran’s performance was really cool. Her character has been portrayed well. Kudos to costume designer for Mundhinam song in which Simran looks gorgeous. :-)

Harris’ background score in second half was amazing. Songs have already become chartbusters.

Cinematography by Rathnavel. Beautifully captures US, Delhi, Kashmir. Good job man!

The characters and the relationship between the characters have been very beautifully portrayed. Be it the bond between Father and Son or the bond between Father Surya and Simran. Father Surya calling Simran as "Darling" is something new. The way Surya respects his father, the way father Surya gives freedom to his son will move each father and son watching the movie.

What I hate in VA?

Excruciatingly slow paced screenplay. Dialogues of Sentiment. Sometimes they were ok, but most of the times they gave a feel :sshhhabbbaa: Is there a thumb rule that this kind of movies should be slow paced?

No excellent dialogues.

Runtime of the movie :yawning:

Certain scenes in first half were very boring.

Some scenes were too artificial. (Eg. Father son surya asking sorry to son surya for using his room in his absence. Huh... )

Which parents will allow their son to stay with his Girlfriend in the same room before marriage? Here is Krisnhan and Simran.. lol.

English dialogues which will not be understood by common people.

Verdict of Vinith:

Varanamayiram means “The strength of thousand elephants”.

Surya’s phenomenal performance equals the strength of 300 elephants, Music and Cinematography equal another 300 elephants, Portrayal of Simran equals 200 elephants and heroines & the portrayal of the characters equal the strength of 199 elephants. Director Gautham's screenplay is the only weaker elephant here. His slow, sometimes merely dragging screenplay and dud dialogues weaken the other elephants. With 999 strong elephants and one weak elephant, the movie is definitely worth watching. Only once.

Kadhalil Vizhundhen

A quick review of “Kadhalil Vizhundhen”

This is one of the different movies in Tamil Film Industry. In fact, an untold story. Kadhalil Vizhundhen is all about a guy who lives with the corpse of his girlfriend thinking that she is still alive. Hmmm… Doesn’t that sound different? Yes, a romance of rare genre! A must watch movie!

Why I liked this movie?

* The story of this movie which is really strong.
* Nakul and the new face Sunaina. Perfect chemistry! Sunaina shines well.
* Vijay Antony’s music. Not for the songs but for the background score. Outstanding BGM for romance scenes elevates the movie to another level. BGM played during the “balloon” scene was my favorite.
* Vijay Milton’s cinematography is another plus.
* The climax.

Why, I may not watch this movie again?

* Sluggish Screenplay for such a powerful story is a big minus. Even though the scene, where we actually come to know that Nakul is mentally abnormal, makes us sit up, the poor screenplay following this scene makes us feel bored.
* Director could have done without a villain.
* Stunts and Songs overdose.

Verdict of Vinith:
Go, watch the movie once. Satisfaction of watching a good movie is guaranteed!

Silambattam - Yuvan Shankar Raja

Well, I had decided not to review this album but I couldn't do it as I'm a huge fan of Yuvan Shankar Raja!

Simbu-Yuvan combo who is well known for grand albums such as Manmadhan and Vallavan has come up with a disastrous album.

The ~~only~~ best song in this album is “Machan machan” sung by his dad and Bela Shinde. A song with matured orchestration and nice interludes. Ilayaraja thoroughly enjoys his son’s composition!

“Where is da party”, is inspired from a very famous folk tune of Tamilnadu. Singers have made this bad song worse. I just couldn’t stand the female voice. There is something in her voice which made me press “Next” button, when I heard “Daamaalu dumeelu”.

“Nalam Thana” – An atrocious attempt at remixing an eternal classic song. Simbu’s voice is horrible. This is one of the worst attempts by Yuvan. This will surely win him so much of criticism. Simbu-Yuvan combo has committed a big sin through this attempt.

Vechukkava – With no change in the tune, charanam, or pallavi, this is a remake in the name of remix.

“Silambattam” sung by Shankar Mahadevan is the hero intro song with typical lyrics that glorify this talented (?) hero! Huh!

Verdict of Vinith:
A very bad album from this combo! More Simbu, less Yuvan!

Sensational Saroja followed by an Average Aegan and now a crap Silambattam. Yuvan’s career graph is lying low! Hope to see a better Yuvan in his next album!

Anandha Thandavam - Music Review - GV Prakash

No doubt. Anandha Thandavam is one of the very few best albums of 2008. GV Prakash Kumar is back with an excellent album after the last two disasters Kuselan and Seval. Anandha Thandavam album has five songs and one theme music.

“Megam” sung by Shankar Mahadevan is the pick of lot. With haunting flute interludes and meaningful lyrics that convey the pain of love failure, the song turns out to be a masterpiece. Shankar Mahadevan is becoming more versatile nowadays. This song is one good example.

The next best song in the album “Poovinai” sung by veteran Srinivas is a sure shot winner among lovers. The seductive female voice belongs to Shreya Ghosal who is at her best in this song too.

The fast paced “Kallil Aadum” has some innovative drum beats and excellent interludes. Singers Benny and Swetha have done their parts well. “Kanaa Kangiren” sung by three female singers Shuba Mudgal, Nithya Sri and Vinithra is instantly likeable. Usage of classical instruments such as Nadhaswaram adds good feel. Composer’s orchestration ability sparkles in this song.

The only song which did not impress me despite its grand orchestration is Naresh Iyer’s “Pattu Poochi”. The “Anandha Thandavam Theme” music, which is the instrumental version of “Poovinai” song, is absolutely mind-blowing. This one instrumental is very close to my heart.

Verdict of Vinith:
Anandha Thandavam music is sure to take GV Prakash to next level. The album is worth buying. I’m eagerly waiting to watch this movie! There is a very good improvement in GVP's compositions. Hope he continues with the same!

Haunting Song

It is always a great pleasure to listen to a haunting/soothing song continually! Isn't it? Now, I've got one such song in my player which doesn't allow me to remove it from the list neither does it allow me to jump to the next song.

This is a simple melody with very minimal orchestration and powerful lyrics that express the pangs of separation (or a love failure). The solo violin in the second interlude and the female voice make my eyes wet. Kudos to this Trio!

A simple tale of a brother and sister hailing from a very poor family. Zahra’s damaged shoes are given for repair. Ali goes and collects the repaired shoes. Ali keeps the shoes outside a shop and goes inside to buy provisions. Accidently a street peddler takes away the shoes along with the wastes. When Ali comes out, he finds the shoes missing. He returns home and informs this to Zahra. Zahra initially decides to inform this to parents but calms down as Ali convinces her that he would surely find the missing shoes. Siblings decide not to inform their parents about the missing shoes.

Ali comes up with an idea when Zahra asks him as what she would wear tomorrow. The idea is, Zahra will wear Ali’s shoes in the morning and hand it over to Ali. Ali would then wear it in the afternoon. Zahra agrees to this condition as she knows that her parents cannot buy a new one. They implement this idea and are quite successful in this. But everyday Ali goes late to school since he has to wait and collect the shoes from Zahra.

One day, Zahra finds her shoes on her schoolmate’s feet. Assuming that her classmate has stolen her shoes, she follows her and finds her house. She then takes Ali to her house to get the shoes. But they return after seeing her family situation which is worse than theirs.

Ali’s school organizes a running race. Ali who was not interested to be a part of the race at first, changes his mind later after he sees the poster which has the prize list. Third prize – A pair of sneakers. Ali breaks this news to Zahra and promises that he will end third in the race.

The race starts! Does Ali succeed in his attempt to win the sneakers? Was he able to keep the promise? Have they got the new pair of sneakers which they were yearning for? – Go, watch the movie!

Best parts of the movie!

Zahra and Ali’s splendid performance. Are these children from heaven?

Ali and Zahra communicate with each other by writing in their notebook. This is because they cannot talk about the lost shoes in front of their parents.

The movie carries very little music but aptly comes in the background. Rerecording for the racing scenes is brilliant.

Every time when Zahra runs to handover the shoes to Ali, I sit up.

The way Zahra tries to catch the shoe which falls into a gutter. The tension she shows on her face when running to catch the shoe is absolutely mind-blowing. This one scene left me at the edge of seat and my eyes were wet! Excellent GBM!

The whole running race episode. The way the director increases your tension during the running race. At one point during the race, Ali realizes that he is in the first place; so he slows down and lets two boys run ahead so that he can end third in the race. When Ali places himself in third position, a boy hits Ali wantonly and runs ahead; Ali falls down. Tension grips!

When Ali loses energy and slows down, the scene where Zahra runs fast to handover the shoes flashes his mind! He gears up and starts running fast! Re-recording for this running race is priceless. You’ll hear only the panting sound of Ali. This piece is very innovative! Again, my eyes brimmed with tears!

To conclude,
This movie is so realistic that almost every brother can relate this story and scenes with his life! The guy who is watching this movie would see himself in Ali and his sister in Zahra!

I strongly feel that this movie should be screened in every school for children on Children’s day! This is not a movie but a journey for me.

Music Review - A Aa E Ee - Vijay Antony

A typical Vijay Antony Album! A mixed bag of one melody, one foot paced number and four kuthu songs.

TV-Serial title song type melody “Natta Nadu rathiri” is good to listen mainly for the orchestration. Packed with violin prelude and flute interludes. Amateurish voice of Sangeetha which suited the title song “Ennai Thedi” of Kadhalikka Neramillai TV Serial, doesn’t suit this song. The fast paced “Dingi Tappu” which is supposed to be a Nakka Mukka V2.0 is passable.

The title song “A aa e ee” song is a rhymes. The other three songs “Mena Minuki”, “Tappo Tappu”, “Kanni vedi” make the no of tracks Six. None of these impressed me.

Verdict of Vinith:

Large part of any Vijay Antony album is filled with kuthu songs. A Aa E Ee is of no exception. It’s high time that composer changes his formula and concentrates more on melody.

Song Review – Mundhinam – Varanamayiram

What would be the outcome if a sweet tune with mesmerizing orchestration, excellent rendition and beautiful lyrics join hands?

Answer: A song like Mundhinam.

My pick of the album. Three people take credits for making this song a memorable one. Composer Harris Jeyaraj, Singer Naresh and Lyricist Thamarai.

Starting with Surya’s voiceover, every bit in this song is thoroughly enjoyable. Magnificent drum beats, enthralling saxophone interludes. You'll soon find the interludes here. Naresh Iyer’s cho chweet voice is the best choice for this song. Lyricist Thamarai’s lyrics carry much weight. I just got stuck to the line “Thulaa thattil unnai vaithu, nigar seiya ponnai vaithaal thulaabaaram thorkadho, perazhage”. Awesome!

Music Review - Aegan - Yuvan Shankar Raja

Successful Ajith-Yuvan combo is back but with a disappointing album this time. Out of five songs, only two songs save the album.

Jazz melody "Hey Baby" sung by Shankar Mahadevan is a sure shot winner. With Yuvan’s brilliant orchestration and Shankar Mahadevan’s astonishing vocals, the song turns out to be the best in this album while the passable track “Odum Varaiyil” is greatly saved by the upcoming singer Bela Shinde. The charanam parts in this song are too good. “Kichu Kichu” did not impress me much despite its grand orchestration and beats. This is mainly because it sounds very similar to the orchestration of my favorite “Sei” song of Billa.

The other two songs "Hey Saala" and "Yahoo" are droning and dissonant pieces, mainly for mass hero.

Verdict of Vinith:
Aegan is strictly for Ajith fans and is out of satisfaction for other music lovers and Yuvan Shankar Raja fans.

I'm missing a solid melody this time also from my favorite Yuvan Shankar Raja. It's been long time since I heard a haunting, soothing melody from YSR. Waiting for atleast one melody in upcoming album Siva Manasula Sakthi. :(

Song Review – Un Thalai Mudi – Kadhalil Vizhundhen (Vijay Antony)

One of the best songs of this year. Sorry last year. Yes, the audio was released in 2007.

I came to know about this song only after Sun Network started promoting this film by freeeeeeequently playing the songs in their channels.

The best part of the song is the saxophone in the prelude. I was stupefied when I listened to this prelude. Never thought that even Vijay Antony would come up with such a nice song. Next is the haunting flute (or some wind instrument?) interludes. The overall orchestration is very simple with mild percussions making the song so soothing to ears.

The only thing which spoils this beautiful song is the female voice which is not so sweet. Don’t know why Vijay Antony wanted Maya to sing in false voice. I’m not at all ok with that voice

Overall, a beautiful song!

Seval – GV Prakash – Music Review

A standard album for Hari movies with three melodies, and three kuthu songs.

Odamarathu Mullapola – Benny Dayal
A typical folk song. Same old tune, lyrics, orchestration which almost every music director in TFM has tried. Doesn’t make an impact.

Thulasi Chediya – Hariharan, Deepa Mariam
The monotonous tune is the main minus point in Thulasi Chediya. A melody which fails to impress you despite the excellent orchestration. I loved the violin piece that comes in the middle. Another “Thaaliye Thevai illa” for singer Hariharan.

Thaayaramma Thaayaaru – Karthik, Vadivel

An inane kuthu song. Karthik has thoroughly enjoyed singing. Vadivel’s voice that comes intermittently is enjoyable.

Namma Ooru Nallaarukku – Anuradha, Tippu, Manickavinayagam
I was instantly impressed by this song mainly because of the beats and the way GVP has fused the tune of “Sandaiku poren, neenga saatchiku vanga” lines of 16-Vayadhinile song at the end of Saranam.

Kannamma Kannamma – Vijay Yesudas, Gayathri

A passable melody. Nothing so great in this song.

Paarvayile Oru Yaekkam – Naresh Iyer

Best song of this album. A beautiful melody with gentle beats and haunting flute interludes. Naresh Iyer outshines in singing once again.

Verdict of Vinith:
An album for B and C centers. Definitely not for A center crowd! We cannot blame GV Prakash for delivering a dud album as he has exactly what Hari wants from any composer. GVP should strictly avoid composing for this kind of movies as we have got Srikanth Deva and D. Imman who have been doing this for years!

Vannathu Poochi - Rehan - Music Review

Vannathu Poochi is an upcoming movie which deals with the relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter. Songs are composed by debutant composer Rehan. Out of 7 songs, only two are listenable.

Aei Vangada – A folk song. No rhythm, no tune.

Ilamai Konjum – A dance number. Flows aimlessly. Really boring.

Kaatril Katril – A typical SA Rajkumar melody with Tabla in the background. Superannuated tune, orchestration, even the vocals.

Mazhai Varum – Another song with no solid melody or attractive beats.I just pressed "Next" button.

Ore Oru – Storytelling song. a.k.a Rhymes. Again "Next" button.

Oru Kudam – This is the best song in the album, sung by a girl. A haunting melody with mild orchestration. Child’s lively voice adds more charm.

Yarukulle Yaaro – Another good number in this album. Soothing tune with excellent male voice. The song does remind you of some other old song. But still, good to listen.

Verdict of Vinith:
Two songs are worth listening. Composer Rehan could have done more hardwork for this off-beat movie.

"Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu" by Selvaganesh - Music Review

Are you happy that TFM has got few good music directors such as James, Kumaran etc. If so, a good news for you. Next in the list of James Vasanthan, SS Kumaran is Selvaganesh who is making his debut in Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. Brilliant compositions!

With Haricharan’s soulful rendition, and very soft tune “Uyiril” turns out to be the best song in this album. The opening Keyboard sounds lovely and is heard throughout the song in the background.

“Laysa Parakudhu”, a rhythmic melody very beautifully sung by talented Karthik and Chinmayi is another striking composition with interesting flute interludes. Karthik again at his best in “Pada Pada”, another melody with interesting orchestration and beautiful lyrics.

Selvaganesh shines well in the fast paced “Kabadi” theme song. Grand orchestration with racy percussions. Who else except Shankar Mahadevan sing this high pitched exhilarating song? His vibrant rendition is a definite plus.

Another "thiruvizha" song “Vandhanam” doesn’t impress you much as we have already got this type of song in Paruthiveeran, Subramaniyapuram and Poo.

Verdict of Vinith:

With three melodies, one fast paced and one folk song, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu is an excellent output of this debutant. Selvaganesh shines well in his debut. 2008 is definitely a great year for debutants it seems. James Vasanthan, SS Kumaran and now it’s Selvaganesh who is making a promising debut.

Stars: 4 stars.

Selvaganesh is a world famous percussionist. He is the son of Vikku Vinayakram, a legend in Carnatic Music, who was nominated for Grammy Award in 1996.

Tune – “Villu paatu” genre, something like story telling. Average

Moongil Vittu sendra
Orchestration – A bit song. So can’t expect much from this.
Tune – Good.
Vocals – Madhu Balakrishnan.

Chinnamma Kalyanam
Orchestration – Again a bit song.
Tune – Merely drags.
Vocals – Kailash again. Nasal.

Sher Punjabi
Orchestration – Again a bit song. Nothing Special.

Vocals - ---DO---

Va va en devadhaiye
Orchestration – Good.
Tune – Average.
Vocals – Madhu Balakrishnan catches your attention.
Lyrics – Good.

Pachai Katre
Orchestration – Good.
Tune – Average. At times, reminds you of “Kadhal enbadhu” of Poovellam Un Vasam.
Vocals – Good rendition by evergreen Sadhana.

Verdict of Vinith:

Overall, Abhiyum Naanum turns out to be an unpleasant album. Unexpected from Radha Mohan – VS combo. Awful!

Varanamayiram - Music Review - Harris Jeyaraj

Harris’s best album of 2008. Harris once again proves that he is king in using “Guitar” and Percussions. I really don't know whom should I credit. Gowtham for getting the best from Harris Jeyaraj or Harris for churning out the best for Gowtham? Or the perfect Chemistry between these two? The songs have come out really well.

Of all seven songs, “Nenjukkul Peidhidum” song is the highlight. Starting with guitar notes, the song takes you completely into it. Hariharan at his best once again. This song turns out to be the best of this album. Guitar interlude is awesome. Thamarai’s lyrics doesn’t fail to impress you. This song would top the charts in the coming weeks and would be one of the top melodies of this year. Harris-Hariharan combo works well.

“Anal Mele Panithuli”, a slow number with soulful singing from Sudha Ragunathan (instead of Bombay Jayashree??). The song sometimes reminds you of “Enadhu Uyire” of Bheema and sometimes reminds you of “Venmagham” (YNM) especially during the first interlude. Not to mistake, the tune is so soothing, with Sudha’s vocals and the solo violin in the second interlude being the highlight. But the song definitely gives “Have I heard this before?” feel. The orchestration is so simple that we certainly miss Harris’ grand orchestration.

A simple, hummable tune with neat orchestration is the folk song “Ava Enna”, which is worked on well by Karthik’s dazzling rendition. The lengthy second interlude is well executed.

Another beautiful song in this album is Mundhinam Parthene. Naresh succeeds again in singing. This song again reminds you of composer’s earlier woks. Neat orchestration with nice Sax interludes and lyrics are thoroughly enjoyable.

Adiye Kolluthe, a peppy song, starts off well and takes you through “Vennilave velli nilave” song during the first interlude and returns to the original tune as the stanza starts. The song is already a huge hit and would go well with the masses for sure. Shruthihaasan’s vocal is charming.

“Yethi yethi” is for those who love dance numbers. Looks like hero’s intro song with lyrics targeted at youngsters. And, at last, the bit song “Oh Shanthi” is also exciting with SPB Charan’s vocals.

Verdict of Vinith:

Harris who failed to impress his fans in “Satyam” is in a very decent form in Varanamayiram. It’s Harris-Goutham which does all this magic.
